THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In the final game of the 2017 Maritime Men's Soccer Classic, the Privateers battled the St. John Fisher Cardinals to a 2-2 tie on Reinhart Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Maritime was led by sophomore
Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor), who registered a pair of goals on the afternoon in the 16th and 67th minutes. Junior
Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) had an assist on the first goal, while freshman
Jerome Eastwood (Houston, Texas/Stratford) tallied an assist on the second goal of the game for the Privateers.
Â
In goal, sophomore
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made five saves and yielded two Cardinal goals as his record remains unblemished.
Â
Olthoff-Cusumano entered at 15:51 into the first half and scored five seconds later as Gallt sent a pass into the box with Olthoff-Cusumano streaking toward the near post and heading the ball inside the right post to put the Privateers on the board first.
Â
St. John Fisher was the next to score just a few minutes later off of a giveaway from the Maritime defense as the Cardinals tied the game at one on an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. The score remained through the end of the half with the Cardinals holding a slim 6-5 lead in shots at the break.
Â
After the break the Cardinals took their first lead of the game on a goal just over two minutes into the half off of a set piece on a corner kick.
Â
Maritime was able to tie the game at two, when the Privateers were awarded a free kick from midfield. Eastwood's pass skimmed off the head of a Cardinal defender and fell to Olthoff-Cusumano, who drove the ball to the back of the net to tie the game at two.
Â
St. John Fisher had several chances in the waning minutes of regulation, and throughout the two overtime periods but were unable to capitalize on their four overtime chances as the final horn sounded to end the evenly matched battle.
Â
Maritime (4-0-1) will be back at home on Wednesday, when the team plays host to the Berkeley (NY) Knights for a 5 p.m. start. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
