THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) wrote his name in the record books on Saturday afternoon as the netminder stopped a program-best 28 shots in a single game during the Maritime men's lacrosse loss to the Stockton Ospreys by a 15-8 score on Reinhart Field.
McNally's 28 save broke the previous single game mark that was set in late April during the 2007 season when
Colin Gallagher '10 set the initial standard of 26 against Merchant Marine. In addition to his 26 saves, sophomore
Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) also stopped six shots for a game total of 34, which broke the previous team mark of 26, which had been accomplished three times in the past.
Junior
Paul Lafrancesca (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, while freshmen
Joe Lugo (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East),
Jackson Specht (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional), and
Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) each had two forced turnovers apiece. Lafrancesca led the ground ball game with five, while sophomore
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) was second on the team with four ground balls. McNally and junior
John Piscitello Jr. (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) each had three ground balls apiece.
Ziemski led the offensive attack with three goals, while senior
Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck), juniors
Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), and
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), sophomore
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber), and Specht all scored single goals on the game. Freshman
Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) picked up two assists on the afternoon while juniors
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and
Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also had helpers.
Maritime started out of the gates on fire and took advantage of an early man-up chance as Ziemski scored from Ragusa. Specht followed with his fifth goal of the year, before Petty scored to make it 3-0 in favor of Maritime. Stockton answered with one, but Diaz netted his eighth of the season to make it 4-1 in favor of the Privateers. The Ospreys scored the next eight goals to take a 9-4 lead late in the second quarter.
Ziemski picked up his second goal of the game with another man-up opportunity to stop the Stockton rally. The Ospreys scored twice more before the close of the first half to take an 11-5 lead into the halftime break.
Just two minutes into the third quarter, Izzo scored a goal followed by strikes from both Pellegrino and Ziemski to pull Maritime back within three at 11-8. Stockton closed out the game with two more in the third quarter, and two in the fourth quarter to cap off the scoring on the afternoon.
Maritime (4-7, 2-4 Skyline) will travel to non-conference Farmingdale on Wednesday, April 12, for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Farmingdale Rams in its next game.
Stockton (12-2, 5-1 Skyline) will visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Kings Point, N.Y.
