Men’s Lacrosse Tripped Up by Mount St. Mary in Skyline Conference Decision

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell to the Mount St. Mary Knights on Wednesday evening by the score of 17-10 on Kaplan Field.
 
Freshman Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the Privateers with seven points as he had three goals and four assists to lead the offensive effort for Maritime. Senior Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) notched three goals, while junior Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) recorded two goals. Sophomore Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Jackson Specht (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers with one goal apiece.
 
Freshman Nick San Filippo (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) was 11-for-23 on faceoff attempts and had two ground balls on the game. Senior Jack Johnson (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and freshman Davis Chewey (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) were 3-for-4 each on their faceoff attempts, with Johnson leading the team with six ground balls on the day.
 
The defensive effort was led by junior Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), who recorded 10 saves in the opening 53:21 of the game. Sophomore Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) recorded one save in the final 6:39 in goal. Sophomore Patrick Fay (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and freshman Joe Lugo (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) each had three caused turnovers apiece, while Ziemski forced one turnover.
 
After Mount St. Mary got on the board first, Maritime answered right back as Connell evened the game just 58 seconds later. Specht gave the Privateers a 2-1 lead with 9:35 left in the opening period as he picked up his fourth goal of the season. The Knights added five more goals in the first quarter, and scored all five goals in the second quarter to take an 11-2 lead into the locker room for halftime.
 
After the break the Knights added another goal to move ahead by 10. Daigle scored back-to-back goals followed by Izzo with one to make it three unanswered goals for Maritime to make in a 12-5 score. Mount St. Mary scored the next two goals before Izzo came back with his second of the game to close out the third quarter with Maritime trailing by a 14-6 margin.
 
In the fourth quarter, Mount St. Mary put the game out of reach with the first two goals of the stanza to make it 16-6. Maritime scored the next four goals as Ziemski and Connell each scored man-up goals followed by a goal from Izzo, and another from Connell as Maritime pulled back within six with 4:47 left in regulation. The Knights added one more unassisted goal with 2:22 left in the game to finish up the scoring and give Mount St. Mary the 17-10 win.
 
Maritime (4-6, 2-3 Skyline) will host Stockton on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field with the opening faceoff set for 1:00 p.m.
 
Mount St. Mary (5-6, 3-2 Skyline) will be on the road this Saturday with a tough task ahead of them, as the Knights match up against the Kean Cougars in New Jersey with the start of the game set for 4 p.m.
