Pfundstein Nets Hat Trick in Women's Lacrosse Season Finale

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end at Reinhart Field on Saturday, falling to the Old Westbury Panthers by a 20-8 margin.

Sophomore Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) had a hat trick for the Privateers, scoring three goals on five shots. Netting two goals each were junior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), and sophomore Carol Ann Gennaro (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) put in one goal for Maritime. In the assists category, freshmen Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly) and Miller Condrack (Siesta Key, Fla./Out of Door Academy) both had one.

Pfundstein and Salatto led the team in ground balls on the day with four and juniors Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) as well as freshman Ojaira Suero (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly), Elizabeth Millicker (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), and Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) all had two ground balls. Senior Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), junior Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington), and Condrack each picked up one. Pfundstein also set a career-high in draw controls on the day as she pulled down nine, bringing her total to 57 on the season, good for second place in the single-season record books behind Catherine Brady '12 who had 74 in the 2012 season.

Eight different Privateers caused turnovers on the day with Pfundstein, Salatto, Yee, Millicker, Hernandez, Granit, Condrack, and Esposito all causing one.

In net, Hernandez had nine saves on the day and will finish the 2017 season with 119 saves, good for fourth all time in single-season saves.

Old Westbury jumped on the Privateers early scoring three goals in the first minute, but Salatto found the back of the net with a nice upper right corner shot to pull the Privateers within two. After five more Panther goals, Salatto struck again with her seventh goal of the season just under the 17 minute mark followed by Pfunstein who started a rally, burying her first goal of the game four minutes later.

The Privateers then scored two goals in 15 seconds with an unassisted goal by Gennaro followed up with Smith finding Brady on a two-on-one trip down the field for the juniors' ninth goal of the season. The three goal stretch brought the Privateers within three, but the Panthers scored nine of the games next ten goals to pull away. Pfundstein scored once more followed by a Brady goal with the help of Miller, but it was not enough as the Panthers added one more with under two minutes remaining to cap off the 20-8 score.

The Privateers finish the season 1-11 overall with a 1-7 Skyline Conference mark, while the Old Westbury Panthers finish the regular season with a 6-9 overall and 5-3 in the Skyline Conference. The Panthers will likely be the #3 seed in the Skyline Conference tournament and will host the six-seeded Purchase Panthers on Tuesday, May 2nd.
