Women's Lacrosse Can't Get Past Knights in Rainy Skyline Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team fell at home on Reinhart Field in Skyline Conference action on a cold and rainy Tuesday evening, dropping a 17-6 decision to the Mount St. Mary Knights.

Maritime was led by sophomore Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who tallied three points on two goals and an assist, followed by sophomore Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) who also added two goals for the Privateers. Also netting goals for Maritime was junior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and sophomore Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) who each put home one goal apiece.

Leading the Privateers in draw controls was Pfundstein with seven, while junior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) tied her season-high in ground balls for the second time this season with four while Salatto picked up two. Freshman Elizabeth Millicker (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), senior Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), along with Brady and Murphy all had one ground ball each for the Privateers.

Defensively, Yee caused a team-high three turnovers followed by Millicker who knocked the ball away twice from the Knights. Brady, Murphy, Salatto along with junior Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) all caused one turnover for Maritime. Freshman Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made seven saves in goal, all occurring in the first half.

Mount St. Mary scored the first seven goals of the contest, but Murphy was fouled with 15:53 on the clock and was sent to the line for a free position attempt where she buried her first goal of the game. Murphy struck again early in the second half without any help for her team-leading 20th goal of the season.

Maritime then saw back-to-back goals within two minutes, first with Brady knocking down an attempted pass by the Knights keeper, collecting the ground ball, and beating her back to the net followed by a goal from Salatto, who put in an unassisted goal. Salatto scored again five minutes later for the Privateers for the fifth goal of the game. Pfundstein followed with a goal after collecting a pass from Murphy, and found the top shelf for the final goal of the contest.

Maritime's five second half goals matched the Knights who also scored five goals in the latter frame, while the Privateers also out-shot the Knights in the final stanza, 10-6. The Privateers also went 10-for-14 on clears for the night, while also edging out the Knights in the draw control category, 15-10.

With the loss, the Privateers drop to 1-10 on the season and 1-6 in the Skyline Conference, while Mount St. Mary balances out their overall record to 6-6 while improving to 5-2 in the conference.

Maritime will wrap up the 2017 season on Saturday, April 29th at Reinhart Field with a tilt against Old Westbury. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.

Mount St. Mary will meet with Farmingdale for a road contest also on Saturday, followed by the Skyline Conference Championship matchup set to begin on May 2nd.
