PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team visited the Saint Joseh's (LI) Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening and fell to its host by a 17-3 score at Danzi Stadium.
Sophomore
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored all three Maritime goals, while classmate
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) dished out an assist to Pfundstein. Pfundstein also picked up two ground balls, caused two turnovers and won five draw controls on the evening. Murphy collected four ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Sophomore
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) picked up a team-high five ground balls on the night while also causing three Golden Eagle turnovers, and junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and freshman
Lilianna Di Gesu (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) also scooped up one ground ball during the contest.
In the cage, freshman
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made eight stops while facing 14 shots on goal.
Saint Joseph's (LI) got started early, scoring the first two goals before Pfundstein fired a free position goal five minutes into action. Murphy connected with Pfunstein who then put in her second goal of the game and 14
th of the season as the Privateers then trailed, 8-2. Saint Joseph's (LI) scored five more before the halftime horn as the Privateers faced a 13-2 deficit midway through.
Saint Joseph's (LI) put through four more to begin the second half, eventually broken up by Pfundstein who netted Maritime's third of the game and final goal of the contest with four minutes remaining.
Caused turnovers were identical for the teams as Maritime and St. Joseph's (LI) each caused 11. The Privateers had 18 ground balls on the evening and also won nine draw controls.
With the loss, Maritime falls to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline Conference. Saint Joseph's (LI) moves to 6-8 on the season while improving to 5-1 in league play.
Maritime returns to Reinhart Field for Senior Day on Friday and will kick off a three-game stretch of home games, beginning with a match against Farmingdale on April 21
st. Opening draw is set for 4:00 P.M.
