Men's Lacrosse Suffers Loss in Second to Last Matchup at St. Joseph's (LI)

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening by a score of 12-4 at Danzi Stadium.

Junior Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) led the Privateers with a goal and an assist on the evening. Senior Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck), sophomore Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also got on board once for Maritime, while sophomore Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and freshman Jackson Specht (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) each also had one assist for the Privateers.

Defensively, Petty, along with freshman Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), Jackson Specht (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional), and Ryan Droluk (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) all caused one Golden Eagle turnover, while Petty and Buchner along with senior Jack Johnson (Annandale, Va./Annandale), juniors Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) and Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), and freshmen Joe Lugo (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Ciaran McEnroe (Pearl River, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) all picked up two ground balls.

In between the pipes, McNally made 17 saves for a 58.6 save percentage. Junior Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) also made a save for the Privateers.

St. Joseph's (LI) buried the first goal of the contest, putting home a rebound after McNally stopped the initial Golden Eagle shot. A St. Joseph's (LI) turnover handed Maritime possession where the Privateers attacked the net with four straight shots, but were unable to produce on that attack. Petty finally connected with Connell at the 10:52 mark for the Privateers first goal of the game and Connell's 19th of the season. After a scoreless seven minutes, the Golden Eagles scored again, followed by a Ziemski goal assisted by Jackson Specht (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) with 2:10 left in the quarter to knot the game up 2-2.

Maritime scored first in the second with Pellegrino finding Izzo for his 14th goal of the season with 8:48 left in the half. After exchanging trips up and down the field, McNally faced a tough test in goal, seeing six Golden Eagle shots during their next possession and stopping all three shots on goal.  St. Joseph's (LI) scored the next two, one of them coming man-up, to make the halftime score 4-3 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The Privateers struggled to get rolling out of the locker room and were held scoreless during the third quarter despite taking eight shots. St. Joseph's (LI) scored three in the quarter, extending their lead to 7-3. The Golden Eagles scored twice more before Pellegrino planted his team-leading 27th goal of the season with 8:30 left in regulation to bring the game within five. St. Joseph's (LI) went on to score three more, putting the game out of reach for the Privateers.
