Men’s Lacrosse Bids Adieu to Senior Class as 2017 Season Comes to a Close

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team hosted the Montclair State Red Hawks on Saturday afternoon, and fell to its guest by the score of 20-7 on Reinhart Field.
 
Prior to the game the Privateers recognized the three-man senior class that played in their final collegiate game on Saturday afternoon. The seniors that were honored were Jack Johnson (Annandale, Va./Annandale), Chris Stickney (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), and Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck).
 
As for the game, the Privateers were led by Izzo, who tallied three goals on the afternoon as he had a team-high seven shots. Junior Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) notched a pair of goals, while freshmen Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Mike Gomes (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) each tallied goals on the game. Johnson along with juniors Brett Daigle (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) along with sophomore Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) each had assists on the afternoon.
 
Johnson had seven faceoff wins, while freshman Nick San Filippo (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) had two wins on the draw. Petty and freshman defender Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) led the Privateers with four ground balls apiece. Pellegrino, along with junior Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), and sophomore Patrick Fay (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) all had three ground balls on the afternoon.
 
Defensively McNally led the effort as he made 11 saves through the first 45 minutes of the game. Petty and Pellegrino each had a pair of caused turnovers, while juniors Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and John Piscitello Jr. (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley), sophomore Matt Kirby (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), as well as Buchner and classmates Dennis Hanley (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Dan Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) each had one caused turnover apiece.
 
Sophomore Justin Weigold (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) opened the fourth quarter in goal for the Privateers and made one save, while junior Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played the final 7:21 of the game in goal for Maritime.
 
Montclair State opened the game with the first goal at the 11:10 mark before Izzo tied the game off of a pass from Petty. The Red Hawks added one more game in the opening quarter before a defensive battle broke out with no scoring until the second period.
 
Montclair opened the second quarter with a goal but Connell answered with the 20th goal of his freshman season. Maritime evened the game at three as Izzo picked up his second goal of the contest off of a pass from the wing out of the stick of Diaz. The Red Hawks scored the next four goals to close out the first half and take a 7-3 lead into the intermission.
 
After two goals from Montclair State gave the Red Hawks a 9-3 lead in the third quarter, Izzo tallied his third goal of the game off a pass from Johnson to pull the Privateers back within five. Montclair scored six more goals in the stanza to put the game out of reach at 15-4 heading into the final quarter of play.
 
In the fourth Pellegrino scored a man-down goal to record his 28th strike of the year on an unassisted goal. Pellegrino answered right back again with a goal from Daigle to make the score 15-6. Montclair State scored the next five goals before Gomes netted his second goal of the season with 2:10 to go and capped off the scoring at 20-7 in favor of the Red Hawks.
 
Maritime closes out the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 4-10 and a Skyline record of 2-7. The team returns a strong core of players including the majority of its starting lineup and will look forward to the 2018 season.
 
Montclair State (8-6, 8-0 Skyline) has a make-up game with Purchase on Monday evening at home, and could clinch the Skyline Conference regular season title as soon as Saturday evening if Mount St. Mary knocks off Stockton at 7 p.m.
