PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team traveled to Purchase College on Wednesday evening where the Privateers fell short to the Panthers in a Skyline matchup, 17-9.
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored a career-high four goals for the Privateers and also led the team with seven draw control wins and six ground balls. The sophomore was also tied for first on the team in caused turnovers with three.
Sophomore
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) each contributed with two goals and three ground balls for the Privateers while Murphy caused three turnovers and Brady caused two. Sophomore
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) rounded out the scorers, netting one goal to go along with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Junior
Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) had one assist for Maritime and also collected four ground balls, and junior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) and freshman
Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly) each caused one Panther turnover.
In the cage, freshman
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) faced 33 Purchase shots, saving seven.
Purchase got on the board first just 45 seconds into the contest, however Maritime tied it up just over two minutes later with a free position goal by Pfundstein. Purchase would then go on to score the next three goals before Murphy found the back of the net to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Panthers. Purchase scored the next five to gain a seven goal advantage, but Pfundstein buried her second goal of the game late in the first half followed by another Panther goal as the Privateers trailed 10-3 at the half.
Purchase scored again to open the second half but Salatto took the ball all the way in for Maritime for her third goal of the season. Maritime and Purchase would then exchange a couple goals each with Pfundstein scoring her third of the game followed by Brady getting a goal from Case. Pfundstein and Murphy teamed up to score two goals in 40 seconds followed by another Brady goal three minutes later as the Privateers kept fighting, down 16-9. Each team went scoreless for nearly the final six minutes before Purchase netted the ender with 41 seconds on the clock to put it away.
Maritime caused 12 total turnovers on the night while also picking up 26 ground balls compared to Purchase's 21. Draw controls were even with each team winning 12 a piece.
With the loss, Maritime drops to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the Skyline Conference. Purchase improves to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.
The Privateers return to action on April 19
th at St. Joseph's (LI) for a Skyline Conference match at Danzi Stadium. Opening draw is set for 5:00 P.M.
