THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team registered their first win of the season on Tuesday evening from a rainy and cold Reinhart Field, as the Privateers knocked off the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins by the score of 9-8.
Maritime was led by sophomore
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), who picked up four goals on the game and five points overall. Sophomore
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and freshman
Miller Condrack (Siesta Key, Fla./Out of Door Academy) each had two goals apiece on the game, while sophomore
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) netted her second goal of the season.
Defensively the Privateers were led by Murphy with three caused turnovers on the game, while Pfundstein and Condrack each had two caused turnovers. Pfundstein and junior
Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) led the squad with four ground balls apiece, while Murphy and junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) along with freshman
Elizabeth Millicker (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) all had two ground balls each.
Freshman
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) was in goal for the Privateers and stopped 11 shots, while earning her first career victory.
Maritime got on the board first with Murphy netting a free position goal to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Privateers. Mount St. Vincent scored the next six goals to take a five-goal lead with 5:38 left in the first half.
Salatto scored with 2:20 left in the half to trim the deficit to 6-2, followed by Murphy scoring from a pass out of the stick of Pfundstein to cut the lead in half at 6-3. The barrage of Privateer goals to close out the half continued as Pfundstein scored off a Murphy pass to make it a manageable two-goal deficit heading into the halftime break.
Maritime continued to comeback in the early stages of the second half as Murphy added another tally with 22:19 left in regulation. Condrack tied the game with her first of the contest with 20:55 left as Maritime erased the five goal deficit to set up the final 20 minutes of regulation.
The Privateers got their first lead of the second half as Pfundstein connected on a free position goal with 18:35 left in the game, but Mount St. Vincent was able to even the score at seven just seconds later. The Dolphins scored again at the 12:48 mark to take back the lead at 8-7.
Murphy tied the game up again on a free position chance with 10:32 left in the game as Maritime came from behind once again to even the score. Condrack put the Privateers up for good from the top of the crease as Maritime pushed back in front with a 9-8 lead.
The Dolphins threatened in the closing stages of the game, but Maritime's defense was able to hold off the Mount St. Vincent attack. The final horn sounded as Maritime emerged victorious for the first time on the season.
Overall the game was evenly matched between the two sides as the Dolphins led in the shot category at 27-25, but turned the ball over on 24 occasions. Maritime turned the ball over just 17 times, and had a higher clear margin with 11 clears in 18 attempts. Draw controls were even at 10 apiece between the sides.
Maritime (1-4, 1-0 Skyline) will next play host to Merchant Marine next Wednesday, as the Privateers and Mariners will meet at 7 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
Mount St. Vincent (1-6, 0-1 Skyline) will travel to Mount St. Mary on Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. start against the Knights on Kaplan Field.
