Women’s Lacrosse Downed by Merchant Marine in Wednesday Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team fell at home on Reinhart Field in Skyline Conference action as the Privateers dropped a 15-3 decision to the Merchant Marine Mariners.
 
Maritime was led by sophomores Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) as the pair combined for the three Privateer goals. Murphy had two goals to reach double figures on the season with 10, while Pfundstein scored the final goal of the game to give her seven on the season. Junior Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) had one assist on the day for the Privateers. Pfundstein also led the Privateers with five draw controls.
 
In goal freshman Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) tied a season high with 14 saves as she faced a season high 39 shots sent in her direction. Junior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers and was tied for second on the team with two ground balls. Freshman Elizabeth Millicker (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) had a team best three ground balls, while Murphy and sophomore Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each had two ground balls on the game.
 
Merchant Marine opened the game with the first nine tallies in the opening 24:59 of the first half.
 
The Privateers got on the board as Murphy took a pass off of Case's free position chance and found the back of the net to put the Privateers on the board. The Mariners regained a nine-goal lead with one more tally in the opening stanza to take a 10-1 lead into the halftime break.
 
Maritime got the first goal of the second half as it was Murphy to score her 10th goal of the season. Merchant Marine then followed with the next five goals of the half to open up a 15-2 lead.
 
Pfundstein was awarded a free position chance in the waning minutes and capitalized as she scored her seventh of the season with 2:13 to go in the game to cap off the scoring at 15-3.
 
Maritime (1-5, 1-1 Skyline) will be back in action on Friday evening, April 7 at 7 p.m., when the team travels to Sage for their annual matchup with the Gators. Please note the changed date and start time of the game.
 
Merchant Marine (4-2, 2-0 Skyline) will travel to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon for an 11:00 a.m. start against the Panthers at Panther Park on Long Island.
