Women’s Lacrosse Nets Seven Goals but Falls Short in Game vs. Wilkes

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team got goals from five different players on Saturday afternoon but it was not enough as the Privateers fell to the Wilkes Colonels by the score of 17-7 on Reinhart Field.

Sophomores Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) each scored twice, while junior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), and freshman Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly) each scored in the loss.

Brady also led the team with four caused turnovers, and was amongst the team leaders with three ground balls. Salatto led the Privateers with five ground balls, while Pfundstein led in the draw control category with six pickups. Junior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) was second on the team with three caused turnovers and also picked up four ground balls. Yee along with junior Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) combined for the team's three assists on the afternoon as well.

In goal, freshman Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) had a season-high 14 saves, while facing a season-high 33 shots on the afternoon.

Maritime took a 1-0 lead as Brady scored on a free-position goal with just 1:28 gone by to put the Privateers up early. Wilkes answered back with the next seven goals to take a 7-1 lead with 6:30 left in the contest.

Pfundstein picked up her first of the contest just seconds later to pull the Privateers back within five at 7-2. Murphy took a pass from Case to make the score 7-3 with 51 seconds left in the first half. The final seconds of the half ticked off, and sent the teams into the locker room with the score 7-3 in favor of the Colonels.

Maritime continued to chip away as Pfundstein scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Case to make it a three-goal game with 28:27 left in regulation. Wilkes scored the next three goals to take a six-goal advantage at 10-4.

Murphy added her second of the game on a free-position shot with just under 20 minutes to go, before Smith registered the first goal of her career to make the score close once again at 10-6. The Colonels added the next six goals to take a 10-goal advantage and begin the running clock, but Salatto picked up the ball after a Case draw control and darted down the field to score her first career goal to trim the deficit to nine. Wilkes scored one more goal in the final five minutes of play to cap off the scoring and give the Colonels the victory.
