THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team improved to 10-2-1 on the year after a 4-2 victory over St. Joseph's (Bklyn) on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
Junior
Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) led the Privateers with two goals. Sophomore
Nicholas Ciacca (Bologna, Italy/Pelham Memorial (N.Y.)) and freshman
Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) each scored while freshman
Phil Hetzer (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) tallied two assists on the match. Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded six saves in the win.
It was a scoreless game until the 34th minute, when Ciacca scored off a cross into the box, assisted by Hetzer. In the 39th minute, Hetzer crossed the ball into the box and Gallt punched it in for his first goal on the day to make it 2-0.
After one half, Maritime lead 10-4 in shots, they also lead the corner kick battle 2-0.
To open the second half, the Privateers got things going with a goal from Palazzolo in the 53rd minute off a cross into the box from junior
Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling). St. Joseph's responded with a goal in the 63rd minute to make it 3-1.
In the 72nd minute, Gallt headed in his second goal thanks to a cross into the box from a free kick by Ciacca giving Maritime a 4-1 lead. St. Joseph's knocked in a second goal in the 89th minute, making the final score 4-2.
Overall, Maritime won the shot battle 17-12 but lost in shots on goal 8-7. St. Joseph's also won the corner kick battle 4-3.
Maritime (10-2-1, 4-1-0 Skyline) will be back in action on Wednesday, October 11th when the team visits Mount St. Mary beginning at 7 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (0-9-1, 0-5-0 Skyline) will play next on Monday, October 9th at Medgar Evers beginning at 5 p.m.
