THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's volleyball team improved to 7-6 on the year after sweeping Purchase in straight sets on Wednesday night at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.

Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) lead the way for the Privateers with 16 kills in the match. Freshman
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) added seven kills while teammate
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) recorded a game high 28 assists for the match. Senior
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and freshman
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) both had a team-high 10 digs also.

Maritime opened the first set with a 6-1 run and would control the rest of the set from there. The Privateers would go on to win the opening set 25-9.

In the second set, Maritime again got off to a fast start leading 9-2 but allowed Purchase to hang around. After Purchase cut the lead to one, 19-18, Maritime responded with four aces in a row. Maritime would win the second set 25-19.

The Privateers began the third set a little slow, as they allowed Purchase to take a quick 5-1 lead. After trailing 8-5, Maritime rattled off seven points in a row, thanks to a kill by Brady and two aces from
Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West), making the score 12-8. Both teams traded points back and forth as Maritime lead by two points, up 16-14. From that point on, Maritime took control scoring five unanswered points to make it 21-14, and eventually would go on to win the third set 25-17 and sweep the match.

Maritime (7-6, 2-2 Skyline) will be back in action on Thursday, October 5th when the team visits Brooklyn for a non-conference matchup at the West Quad Center beginning at 7 p.m.

Purchase (0-11, 0-2 Skyline) will host St. Joseph's (L.I.) next Tuesday, October 10th beginning at 7 p.m.
