BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team fell in a non-conference road match on Thursday evening to the Brooklyn Bulldogs in straight sets from the West Quad Center.
Senior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led the offensive attack with a match-high nine kills to go along with three service aces to lead the team. Senior
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added six kills as she finished the night second on the team with seven digs. Freshman
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) had 21 assists on Maritime's 29 kills on the evening.
Defensively Maritime was led by rookie
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) with 18 digs on the night, which was the second highest dig output of the season for the freshman. Brady also had seven digs, as she ended the night tied with Kempski for second on the team.
It was a back-and-forth affair through the first 30 points of the match as the score was tied at 15 in the opening set. Brooklyn scored the next four points to take a 19-15 advantage and did not turn back as Maritime was unable to overcome the deficit as the Bulldogs took the opener by a 25-20 score.
The second set saw Maritime and Brooklyn battle to a 5-5 tie in the early going behind kills from Kempski and junior
Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) as well as an ace from Brady. Brooklyn rallied for the next three points but Maritime closed back within one following a kill from Brady. The Bulldogs rallied ahead by a 12-7 margin as Maritime was only able to pull back within three through the remainder of the set as Brooklyn won 25-18.
Maritime fell behind early in the third but erased a 4-0 deficit behind two kills from Brady and one from Kempski as the Privateers took the lead at 6-5. Brooklyn scored the next six points unanswered and next 12-of-15 to take a 17-8 lead. Maritime attempted to come back with four unanswered to trim the score to 19-15 but it was not enough as Maritime dropped the set 25-16 and the match in three sets.
Maritime (7-7, 2-2 Skyline) will be back in action this Saturday, when the team travels to William Paterson University for a non-conference tri-match with the host Pioneers and the York Cardinals.
Brooklyn (11-5, 4-0 CUNYAC) hosts Sarah Lawrence on Friday evening for a 6 p.m. start with the Gryphons.
