THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team completed their 2017 regular season on Wednesday night, falling 3-2 to the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on 'Senior Night' on Reinhart Field.
Prior to the match the Privateers honored the three members of the senior class on the field with seniors
Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson),
Harry Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandenmeulen) and
Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) all being recognized in an on-field ceremony.
Freshman
Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) had one goal for the Privateers with two of his six shots landing on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made four saves on the night.
It was an evenly match first half, Mount St. Vincent broke the deadlock scored the first goal of the match in the 44th minute to go up 1-0, and took the slim lead into the halftime break. Despite the Privateers trailing on the scoreboard, Maritime led in shots at 10-7 and 1-0 in corner kicks.
In the 49th minute, Palazzolo had two shots back-to-back, after his initial shot was stopped by the Dolphin goalkeeper the ball bounced right back to Palazzolo, who drove the ball into the net for his ninth goal of the year to even the score at one. In the 51st minute after a corner kick from Colucci, the ball bounced off a Dolphin defensive player inside the six-yard box and into the Dolphin net for an own goal to give the Privateers a 2-1 lead.
Mount St. Vincent responded shortly after with a goal in the 52nd minute to even the score at two. Mount St. Vincent regained its one-goal lead in the 61st minute as the Dolphins headed in a goal off a long cross into the box making the score 3-2.
Maritime had one chance in the closing minutes with junior
Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) taking a shot that missed in the 87th minute, but the Privateers could not push one across as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Maritime (11-4-2, 5-3-1 Skyline) finished in fourth place in the standings and will be back in action on Saturday, October 28th when the team hosts fifth seeded Old Westbury in the opening round of the Skyline Conference beginning at 6 p.m.
Mount St. Vincent (8-6-1, 6-1-1 Skyline) is the three seed and will host sixth seeded Purchase on Saturday, October 28th.
