NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team dropped their two matches on Saturday in a tri-match with Baruch and Rutgers-Newark at Arc Arena on Saturday afternoon. At the tri-match senior outside hitter
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) recording her 1000th kill for her career as she becomes the first Privateer to reach the millennium mark for kills.
Maritime lost the first match against Baruch 3-1 and followed with a loss in the second match 3-0 to Rutgers-Newark. Against Baruch Maritime fell 25-20, 25-22, before winning the third set by a 25-23 margin, but the Bearcats came away with the win in the fourth set by a 25-22 score to take the match. The Privateers fell in straight sets to Rutgers-Newark; 25-20, 25-11, and 25-15.

In the first match, Brady had a team-high 18 kills while also leading the team in digs with 17. Freshman setter
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) recorded 37 assists, and senior outside hitter
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added 10 kills.
In the opening set, Baruch got out to an early 6-2 lead and led from that point on. Maritime made it 23-20 late but was not able to complete the comeback as Baruch took the first set 25-20.
The second set began as a back and forth battle with the score tied at 6-6. Baruch went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Maritime hung around eventually cutting the lead to one, but Baruch scored the next two points to take the second set 25-22.
In the third set Maritime had the lead early 9-5 but Baruch responded with a 4-0 run to tie it up at nine. The Privateers managed to keep a small lead throughout the set up until Baruch evened the score at 19.
The score was 23-22, when Brady recorded her 15th kill of the match, giving her 1000 for her career. Maritime notched the next two points to win the third set, 25-23.
In the fourth set, Maritime led 3-0 but allowed Baruch to make a run giving them the lead right back as Baruch went up 10-6. Baruch was up four when the Privateers went on a 4-0 to knot the game at 20 thanks to an ace and kill from Kempski. Baruch closed out the set and won 25-22 to take the match, three sets to one.
Maritime vs. Rutgers-Newark
The second match of the day was vs. Rutgers-Newark as the Scarlet Raiders defeated the Privateers in straight sets. Brady led the Privateers with six kills on the match while Kirchner recorded 10 assists. Freshman
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) had a team-high eight digs on the match.
In the first set, Maritime led 4-2 but then Rutgers-Newark responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead. The Scarlet Raiders controlled the rest of the set and win 25-10. In the second set, both team went back and forth early with Rutgers-Newark leading the set 6-4. Despite a small run at the end Maritime dropped the second set 25-11.
The third set was more of the same as the Scarlet Raiders got out to a quick lead and never looked back. Maritime held the score close and trailed 13-7, when Rutgers-Newark rattled off four in a row to make it 17-7. The Scarlet Raiders went on to close out the match with a third set score of 25-15.
Maritime (9-11, 3-3 Skyline) will be back in action on Sunday, October 15th when the team hosts Old Westbury and St. Joseph's (L.I.) in a tri-match beginning at 11 a.m.
Baruch (9-12, 5-2 CUNYAC) will play Tuesday, October 17th when they visit Purchase beginning at 7 p.m.
Rutgers-Newark (8-12, 1-5 NJAC) will play Tuesday, October 17th when they host William Paterson starting at 7 p.m.
