THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team welcomed the City College of New York Beavers to Reinhart Field on Saturday morning in a non-conference showdown. The Beavers won by the score of 3-1.
Maritime's lone goal of the game came off the foot of junior captain
Brett Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), as he scored to break up the shutout in the 67th minute of play. While in goal, freshman
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made four stops on the day.
The Privateers had the first scoring opportunity of the game as Reilly took a header towards goal but a leaping Beaver goalkeeper made the save. Maritime's next chance came several minutes later as sophomore
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) drove down the left wing off a pass and made the goalkeeper make a diving effort to keep the game scoreless.
City College got on the board first in the 36th minute on a quick passing attack from the Beavers. On a the goal held through the remainder of the half as the Beavers took a 1-0 edge into their locker room.
Out of the gate in the second half, City College added two goals to take a 3-0 lead with just 4:37 gone by in the second stanza.
Senior
Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had a strong chance to score in the 56th minute, when he rang a sharp drive off the post. The Privateers finally broke through about 10 minutes later as Gallt sent a crossing pass to the near post for Ferreira, who threaded the needle and found Reilly on the far post to tap the ball in for Maritime's first goal of the contest.
The Privateers were only able to muster just two more shots, as freshman
Nicholas Ciacca (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had his chance sail wide, while classmate
Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) had his shot blocked in front of the net by the Beaver defense on a free kick.
Time expired on the Privateers, as the Beavers held on for the 3-1 victory. City College outshot Maritime by a 20-11 margin, while taking 11 corner kicks to Maritime's three.
Maritime (1-1) will look to get back in the win column on Monday evening, when the Privateers play host to Medgar Evers at 7:30 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
