THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime Men's Soccer played a late night Labor Day matchup with the Medgar Evers Cougars on Reinhart Field, and needed overtime to knock off their guests by a score of 1-0.
Sophomore
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) had the game-winning strike with 5:42 gone by in the first overtime period. Sophomore
Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) had the assist on the goal for the first point of his career.
In goal, freshman
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made his first collegiate start and made six saves en route to his first career victory.
The game started off with Medgar Evers taking the first shot, which was stopped by Rodriguez for the first save of his career just 9:09 into the first period. Sophomore
Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem), making his first start of the season, took a shot just over a minute later that was stopped by the Cougar netminder.
The game remained deadlocked through the initial 45 minutes with Maritime getting outshot by a 7-5 margin, but took four corner kick chances to Medgar Evers' two.
As the game progressed to the second half, Maritime had their chances to score but were unable to finish as the Medgar Evers goalkeeper stopped everything sent his way. The same could be said for the Cougars, who were unable to solve Rodriguez as he made several key saves in the second stanza.
With the game scoreless after 90 minutes of play, the Privateers were heading to overtime for the first time on the season. Maritime took the first two shot of the extra session, but neither were on target, as was the lone Medgar Evers shot of the second half.
The game moved into the 96th minute, as Merendino had the ball along the right wing and chipped the ball into the six-yard box. Gallt found the ball and was able to knock it across the goal line to give Maritime the 1-0 overtime victory.
Final stats saw Maritime take 19 shots with nine on target, while Medgar Evers ended the contest with 16 shots and six on goal. Corner kicks were 10-5 in favor of Maritime, while both teams were called offsides on two occasions.
Maritime (2-1) will regroup after three games in five days, and look forward to next weekend as the Privateers will travel to Utica, N.Y. to take part in the Pioneer Soccer Invitational. Maritime's first match of the weekend will be against host Utica on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Medgar Evers (0-2) will look to recover after two-straight overtime losses, as the team will host York (N.Y.) in their first conference contest of 2016 on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Brooklyn.
