Valiant Comeback Attempt for Men's Soccer Falls Short vs. Yeshiva

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer Team scored twice in the second half, but it was not enough as the Privateers fell to the Yeshiva Maccabees by the score of 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

The Privateers got goals from a pair of freshmen as rookie Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) picked up the first goal of his career, while classmate Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) scored his third goal of the season.

In goal, freshman Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) played the full 90 minutes once again and notched three saves on the evening.

Yeshiva struck with the first three goals of the game as the Maccabees scored in the fourth minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. The Maccabees scored again in the 25th and 36th minutes to take a 3-0 lead, which held through the remainder of the period.

Through the first 45 minutes of play, Yeshiva outshot Maritime by a 13-9 margin.

In the second half, Maritime turned things around and trimmed the deficit to two just over three minutes into the second half as Forrest fired a shot on target after the initial shot by junior Matt Smith (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) was saved.

At the start of the 62nd minute, Sblendorio picked up his third goal in the last two games off of a cross from Forrest.

Maritime was able to take several more shots through the remainder of the game, but was unable to tie the game in the closing minutes.

Maritime (5-6-0, 1-3-0 Skyline) will return to play next Tuesday evening, when the Privateers play host to the Mount St. Mary Knights on Reinhart Field with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

Yeshiva (2-7-1, 2-5-1 Skyline) will be on the road this Friday at 12 p.m., when the Maccabees visit the Farmingdale Rams for another Skyline Conference contest.
