KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team opened up Skyline Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Brook Stadium in Nassau County, the Privateers fell to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 5-0.
The Privateers were only able to combine for nine shots on the afternoon, including four on target. Senior
Matthew Pavek (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), junior
Matt Smith (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), sophomore
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and freshman
Thomas Langkafel (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) all had shots on goal for the Privateers.
In goal, freshman
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made six saves on the afternoon.
Merchant Marine got on the board quickly with a goal just 44 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead. The Mariners scored again in the 10th and 25th minutes to open up a three-goal advantage. Merchant Marine scored once more in the waning minutes of the period to go ahead by a 4-0 score.
In the second half, freshman
Braden Parent (Wilmington, N.C./Coast Christian) took a shot that sailed over the crossbar in the 53rd minute. Then in the 62nd minute, Pavek took back-to-back shots that was blocked, and then went wide of the post on the second attempt.
In the 70th minute of play, Gallt was awarded a penalty kick and lined up for the shot. Shooting towards the lower right corner of the goal, the Merchant Marine goalkeeper guessed right and stopped the shot on a dive.
The Mariners added a goal late in the contest to cap off the scoring at 5-0 in favor of Merchant Marine.
Maritime (3-4, 0-1 Skyline) will next play host to Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday evening on Reinhart Field for a 7:30 kickoff against the Gryphons as Skyline Conference play continues.
Merchant Marine (2-2-2, 2-0 Skyline) will play host to Stevens on Wednesday evening at Brooks Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. start.
