THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team picked up their first Skyline Conference victory by the score of 3-0 on Reinhart Field as they played host to the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Tuesday evening.
Senior
Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) collected his second goal of the season to get the scoring started, followed by goals from sophomore
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), and senior
Demetri Geras (New York, N.Y./School of the Future) to round out the offensive output for the Privateers. Junior
Brett Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a pair of assists on the match, while Gallt had one, freshman
Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) picked up the first point of his career with an assist on Ferreira's goal.
Maritime got the first two shots off of the matchup in the opening eight minutes to control the tempo, but Sarah Lawrence came back and took a few chances as the teams remained scoreless through the opening 20 minutes.
In the 21st minute, Forrest threw the ball into the box from the sideline and found Gallt, who then passed to Ferreira for the opening goal of the contest.
The Privateers continued to have their chances in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to capitalize as the 1-0 lead held through the halftime break.
After the intermission, Maritime had a multitude of chances including three-straight corner kicks in the 64th minute, but were unable to pull the trigger. As play continued, the Privateers got the ball back around midfield and the ball was fed up to Gallt, who moved around a defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to give the Privateers their second goal of the match.
In the 83rd minute, Geras had his shot blocked by the defense, but eventually got the ball back off of a long lead pass from Reilly and headed the ball down into the goal. For Geras, it was the first goal of his career.
In goal, freshman
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) picked up the clean sheet after making just three saves in the second half as he played the entirety of the match.
Final shots were 20-6 in favor of the Privateers, with corner kicks well in favor of Maritime at 8-0. The Privateers were also whistled for being offsides on one occasion.
Maritime (4-4-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) will play host to Old Westbury on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field in their next match, looking to improve their league record against the Panthers.
Sarah Lawrence (3-4-0, 0-3-0 Skyline) will travel to local foe Mount St. Vincent as the Gryphons and Dolphins will battle on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Skyline Conference competition.
