THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team wrapped up the home portion of its 2016 schedule with a 19-6 loss to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening on Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by freshman
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place), who recorded three goals on her four shots, while also leading the team with six draw controls. Junior
Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and freshman
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) each recorded one goal apiece. Senior
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) also had an assist on the game.
Freshmen
Carol Ann Gennaro (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) both recorded two caused turnovers apiece, while Pfundstein had a team-best five ground balls. Senior
Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and classmate
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) each scooped up three ground balls apiece.
In goal, Packowski had a top-level performance as she recorded 17 saves on the game, which ties the eighth most by a Privateer goalkeeper in program history.
St. Joseph's (LI) scored the opener just 86 seconds into the contest, but Deleva responded with a free-position goal to even the game at one. The Golden Eagles scored the next eight goals to take a 9-1 advantage.
The Privateers scored three of the next four goals as Murphy scored on a free-position goal, followed by a a goal from Brady with 6:34 left in the half. After a Golden Eagle goal, Quinn collected her 18th goal of the year in the final three minutes to make it 10-4 heading into the halftime break.
After St. Joseph's (LI) scored the next eight goals to start the running clock, Maritime got another goal from Deleva with 5:04 left in the game to trim the deficit to 18-5.
Deleva scored her third of the game on a free-position goal as she collected her team-leading 34th goal of the season with 1:46 left in the game. The Golden Eagles scored the final goal of the game with 13 seconds left to cap off the scoring at 19-6.
Maritime (4-8, 2-4 Skyline) will look to finish off the regular season with a victory on Saturday as the Privateers will travel to Mount St. Mary for a 12 p.m. start against the Knights on Kaplan Field.
St. Joseph's (LI) (10-4, 6-0 Skyline) will vie for first place on Saturday afternoon when the Golden Eagles play host to the Purchase Panthers for a 12 p.m. start at Danzi Stadium.
