NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) set the program record for goals in a season as she scored twice in the team's Skyline Conference loss to the Mount St. Mary Knights on Saturday afternoon on Kaplan Field. The Knights won the game by a 20-7 score.
With her two goals on the game, Deleva collected her 35th and 36th goals of the year as she broke the previous program record of 35 goals set by
Kristen Saporito during the 2012 campaign.
In addition to Deleva's pair of goals, senior
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) netted a pair of goals in her final collegiate game. Sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), and freshmen
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) also recorded goals in the loss.
Deleva's goal-scoring total was not the only record, as she also recorded her 13th assist on the year to tie the single-season mark set by
Tessa Jardine during the 2012 season.
In goal, senior
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made seven saves in her final collegiate contest, adding to her already program-record for saves in a career at Maritime. Reynolds and freshman
Carol Ann Gennaro (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both tallied a team-best three ground balls.
On draw controls, Deleva led Maritime with five, while Pfundstein and junior
Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) each recorded a pair.
Mount St. Mary took a quick 1-0 lead, then added three more goals to take a 4-0 lead in the opening nine minutes of play.
With 17:58 left in the period, Maritime got on the board as Deleva scored her record-tying 35th goal of the season. Deleva netted the record-setting goal with 16:27 to go in the half as she trimmed the lead in half on an unassisted goal to make the score 4-2.
Mount St. Mary ran away with the game with eight unanswered goals to expand its lead to a 12-2 margin. Murphy scored to make the score 12-3, but the Knights added two more goals to take a 14-2 lead into the halftime break.
The Knights continued with six more goals in the second half before Brady ended the Knights run with a man-up goal with 16:16 to put four goals on the board for the Privateers. Mount St. Mary scored again, followed by a goal from Pfundstein, Reynolds then added a pair of man-down goals to make it a 20-7 score.
Team stats saw Maritime trail in shots by a 17-30 margin, while the Privateers turned the ball over 22 times, while the Knights gave the ball away 16 times. Maritime also had 12 ground balls on the game, while Mount St. Mary scooped up 22 loose balls.
Maritime closes out the season with a 4-9 overall record, while holding a 2-5 mark in Skyline Conference contests.
Mount St. Mary finishes out its season with a 7-8 overall record and a 3-4 mark in league contests.
