THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team fell to the Farmingdale Rams, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference contest on Reinhart Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) racked up 16 saves on 36 shots in the loss.
Senior
Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and sophomore
Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) anchored the Privateer defense as both recorded four ground balls and one caused turnover apiece. Senior long-stick midfielder
Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and freshman midfielder
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) added two caused turnovers each. The Maritime defense held down the Farmingdale attack in the middle periods, only allowing two goals over the 30-minute span.
Senior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) dominated the faceoff battle, winning 15-of-17 faceoffs and picking up 13 ground balls.
Maritime was led in attack by sophomore
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), who scored two goals, both in the first quarter to boost his season total to a team-leading 31 goals. Classmate
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) assisted on both of the goals by Pellegrino.
Sophomore
Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) added a goal on six shots to go along with two ground balls and forced two turnovers. Freshman
Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) scored Maritime's final goal of the game for his fifth of the season.
Farmingdale started out strong, scoring the first three goals of the contest. But Maritime rallied back as Pellegrino scored his two goals back-to-back, only four seconds apart, to cut the deficit to three after the first quarter.
Both the second and third quarters were a defensive battle, as Farmingdale scored two scattered goals in the second quarter and then were shutout by Maritime in the third. Neither side recorded a goal in the third quarter of the contest.
In the final period, Farmingdale scored two early goals to take to increase their lead to five to take a 7-2 advantage. Diaz then answered with his goal at the 12:32 mark of the period. Petty's goal came with just under four minutes to go in the game.
Maritime was outshot by Farmingdale (11-3, 3-1 Skyline) 36 to 30. Farmingdale went 23-33 on clear attempts as Maritime cleared 19 of their 26 chances. The Privateers edged out the Rams 36 to 35 in ground balls. The two teams combined to go 0 for 9 in extra man opportunities.
Maritime (6-6, 1-2 Skyline) will take on Mount St. Vincent on Wednesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. on Reinhart Field in the team's final home game of the 2016 season.
