THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime Women's Lacrosse team fell at home versus the Purchase Panthers in their Skyline Conference opener by the score of 20-10 on Reinhart Field.
Maritime was led by sophomore
Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), who recorded a team-best three goals on the afternoon. The Privateers also got two goals from juniors
Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and
Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), along with sophomore
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) picking up two goals
Ireland and senior
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) also recorded assists on the game. Pfundstein led the team with four draw controls, with Quinn collecting three and Ireland scooping up two draw controls.
Defensively, senior
Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) recorded 14 saves in her first start of the year in goal, while leading the team with three ground balls. Freshman
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was also tied for the team lead with three loose ball pickups. Six different Privateers also recorded one caused turnover apiece.
Maritime started off the game with a pair of goals as Quinn recorded her eighth goal of the season to open the scoring on the afternoon. Just over a minute later, Ireland netted a goal off of a quick pass from Reynolds. With the assist, Reynolds tied the all-time mark at Maritime with 13 career assists.
Purchase trimmed the lead in half, but Maritime regained its two-goal advantage as Quinn picked up her second of the game. Another Panther goal, was followed by another Privateer tally as Ireland netted her second goal of the game.
The Panthers took their first lead of the game on three unanswered tallies, but Mitchell got in on the scoring action to make the game even once again at five as she tied it with 8:40 left in the opening half. Purchase closed out the half with four unanswered goals to make the game 9-5 in favor of the Panthers.
After a Purchase opened the second half with a goal, Maritime scored two straight as Pfundstein picked up her fourth of the season followed by Deleva netting her 13th of the year to pull Maritime back within three at 10-7. The Panthers then scored the next five to take a 15-8 advantage.
Mitchell broke the drought with her seventh of the season, then just over a minute later scored again to make the game 15-9. Purchase followed with five straight to keep the clock running, but Pfundstein scored with 3:33 left in the second half to finish off the scoring at 20-10.
Team stats saw Purchase outshoot its hosts by a 41-24 margin, while Maritime turned the ball over 15 times to Purchase's nine. Both teams failed to clear on two of their attempts as Purchase was 15-for-17 while Maritime was 13-for-15.
Maritime (2-4, 0-1 Skyline) will continue league play next Saturday, when the team plays host to the Sage Gators at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
Purchase (4-1, 1-0 Skyline) will return home for a 7 p.m. start on Thursday, April 7 as they play host to the Mount St. Mary Knights as Skyline Conference Play continues.
