Deleva’s Nine-Point Output Powers Women’s Lacrosse Past Sage, 14-10

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) finished Saturday afternoon's game with nine points as she recorded five goals and four assists in the team's 14-10 victory over the Sage Gators from Reinhart Field.

Her four assists ties the Maritime record for assists in a game, as she becomes just the second player in program history to register four helpers in a single contest. Deleva was also just the second player to ever record nine points in a game, falling one point shy of tying the single-game record of 10 points, as Heather Christiansen '10, had a double-digit point effort in April of 2007 against Pine Manor.

In addition to Deleva's nine points, classmate Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) was second on the team with three goals and two assists and also recorded three draw controls. Junior Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) had two goals and one assist, while sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and freshman Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) both collected two goals apiece.

On the first goal of the contest, senior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) assisted on the first goal by Murphy. With the assist, Reynolds became the program record-holder for career assists with 14 over the span of her four-year career. She also moved into seventh place on the all-time points list with 34 over her 43 career games played.

Defensively, Maritime was led by freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), who recorded eight loose ball pickups and caused a team-best three turnovers. Sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) also caused a pair of turnovers, and scooped up one ground ball, while recording one assist. Ireland and Reynolds both picked up two ground balls, while Deleva added two forced turnovers and three ground balls.

In goal, senior Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) stopped eight shots sent her way while allowing 10 goals. She was also credited with one caused turnovers on the afternoon as she won her first game of the season and ninth for her career.

Maritime took the lead just 30 seconds into the game as Reynolds fed Murphy from behind the cage for the opening goal of the contest. Ireland made the score 2-0 off a pass from Brady less than two minutes later. Sage then scored the next four goals and took a 4-2 lead with less than 10 minutes to go in the opening half.

Pfundstein got on the board with her first of the afternoon off a pass from Deleva, who then scored next to even the game at four. Ireland put the Privateers back on top at 5-4, but Sage answered back to tie the game.

In the waning minutes of the opening half Deleva scored on a free-position shot, followed by a goal off the stick of Mitchell, whose quick strike made the game 7-5 heading into the halftime break.

Sage got the scoring started in the second half as the Gators connected on the first two of the period to tie the game once again with sevens on the scoreboard.

Pfundstein, Deleva, Murphy and Pfundstein again scored the next four goals to give Maritime its largest lead of the game at 11-7. Deleva scored twice more, and assisted on the final goal of the game by Mitchell as the Privateers emerged with their first Skyline win of the season at 14-10.

Shots, ground balls, saves and turnovers were all relatively close between the Privateers and the Gators. Maritime was 2-for-6 on free position attempts, while Sage was 4-for-4. Both teams struggled on clears as the Gators finished 11-for-23, while the Privateers were 13-of-27.

Maritime (3-4, 1-1 Skyline) will wrap-up the non-conference portion of its slate on Wednesday evening as the Privateers visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a 7 p.m. start in the 2016 edition of the "Sound Shootout".

Sage (3-6, 0-2 Skyline) will also be on the road for its next contest as the Gators travel to Southern Vermont for a 4 p.m. matchup on Thursday, April 14.
