Women's Lacrosse Falls Short against Coast Guard in Non-Conference Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team fell short against Coast Guard, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.

Freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) scored four goals on nine shots on the day to lead the Privateers. Sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) and freshman Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) each added three goals of their own.

Junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) also netted a goal on seven shots and added two assists.

In goal, junior Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) recorded 13 saves on 29 total shots in the full 60 minutes in net.

Murphy opened up the game by scoring her fourth goal of the season just over a minute into the match on an assist from Quinn. After three goals from the Bears, Deleva scored her first of four goals at the 17:12 mark to cut the lead to one.

Quinn added another goal five minutes later in a man-up situation to tie up the game at 3 with 12 minutes to go in the period. Next, Coast Guard scored two goals back-to-back in the 11th minute to take the lead.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, Mitchell and Deleva added another goal each to cut the score to 6-5 going into the half.

Despite scoring six goals in the half, Maritime was never able to take the lead over the Bears. Murphy added two more goals early in the half in the 23rd and 19th minutes. At the 13:10 mark, Deleva scored her third goal of the game to cut the lead to one.

Mitchell and Deleva combined for three more goals in the last 10 minutes. Mitchell scored her third of the game with four minutes to go but the Privateers were not able to tie it up.The final score was 12-11.

Coast Guard (2-5) outshot the Privateers 29-27 and won the draw control battle 15-10. Both teams finished up 14 of 24 on clear attempts in the closely contested match.

Maritime (2-2) will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, March 23 at SUNY Polytechnic at 6 p.m. in Utica, N.Y.
