Women's Lacrosse Drops First Game of Season in Road Contest vs. Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Wilkes Colonels on Tuesday evening by the score of 18-2.
 
Maritime was led by freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) with two goals on the contest, while sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) added seven shots and freshman Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) added a pair. Junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) rounded out the shot total for the Privateers as Maritime amassed 12 shots.
 
In goal, junior Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) recorded five saves while taking her first loss of the season. Defensively, Murphy led the team with four caused turnovers while junior Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and Quinn each caused two apiece. Junior Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), along with freshmen Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) all caused one turnover each.
 
Quinn and Deleva led the Privateers in the draw control department with three draws each, while senior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) picked up two. Ireland and Mitchell bot recorded one.
 
In the ground ball department, Murphy led the charge with six, followed by Finnen with four. Ireland added three, while Quinn, Deleva and freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) all had two. Esposito, Hayes, as well as freshmen Carol Ann Gennaro (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) all had one ground ball in the game.
 
The Colonels scored 12 goals in the opening 30 minutes of play and took that lead into the halftime break. Wilkes scored the next five in the second half, before Deleva put the Privateers on the board. The Colonels netted one more, followed by Deleva capping off the scoring at 18-2.
 
Maritime (2-1) will look to bounce back in its home opener, when the Privateers play host to the Coast Guard Bears at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
