BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Maritime Women's Lacrosse team opened its season on Friday evening with the Privateers beginning their year with the 2016 edition of the Maritime Cup. The squad opened the year with a comeback victory over the host Mass. Maritime Buccaneers by the score of 10-8 at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Senior
Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), who recorded three goals on three shots, was one of the leaders for the Privateers. Junior
Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) had a game-high four points with three goals and one assist, and also had a team-best three draw controls.
Sophomore
Andrea Mitchell (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) picked up a pair of goals in her lacrosse debut, while newcomers
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) both recorded the first goals of their respective careers.
Deleva and freshman
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both led the team with four ground balls apiece, as the pair also led the team with two forced turnovers each. In addition to Quinn picking up an assist, Deleva and freshman
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) also picked up helpers in the win.
In goal, junior
Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) stopped seven shots en route to the victory. Finnen also chipped in with three loose ball pickups.
Mass. Maritime was the first team to strike, as the Buccaneers scored just 37 seconds into the game. The Privateers responded as Reynolds evened the game at one, but the Buccaneers took back its one-goal advantage just 21 seconds later. Mass. Maritime added the next two goals to open up a 4-1 lead.
Reynolds put an end to the Buccaneer rally with her second of the game to cut the deficit in half. However, Mass. Maritime was awarded a free-position shot and took advantage of the opportunity to take back a three-goal lead.
The Privateer offense took over the next portion of the game as the team recorded three goals in the span of 70 seconds. Pfundstein netted her first collegiate goal off a pass from Quinn, followed by goals from Deleva on a free position, then by Quinn for her first of the year to tie the game at five.
After a turnover by the Buccaneers in the final minute of the half, Maritime stormed down the field and Mitchell scored with just one second left off a pass from Deleva to give the Privateers their first lead of the game heading into the second period.
With momentum on their side, Quinn picked up her second of the game to give Maritime a 7-5 advantage. The Buccaneers answered back, but Quinn gave the Privateers a two-goal lead once again with 19:20 left in the game.
Mitchell netted a free-position goal to give Maritime its largest lead of the game at three, but again the Buccaneers responded to keep the game close. The Privateers killed off a man-down situation, and used that momentum to score its 10th goal of the game as Reynolds scored her third of the contest with 1:39 left in the game. Mass. Maritime scored on a free position with 29 seconds left, and then won the ensuing draw control.
However, the Buccaneers turned the ball back over to the Privateers as Pfundstein picked up the ground ball to complete the victory for Maritime.
Team stats saw shots relatively close with a 19-18 advantage held by the Buccaneers. Turnovers, clears and ground balls were also close, with the Privateers holding a 12-7 lead in the draw control department.
Maritime (1-0) will look to take home the Maritime Cup on Saturday afternoon, when they play their final game of the weekend against Maine Maritime at 4 p.m. During the game, the Privateers will be vying for their second straight Maritime Cup.
