Women's Lacrosse Finishes Off the Maritime Cup Sweep with Win against Maine Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Women's Lacrosse team hoisted the Maritime Cup after defeating Maine Maritime 14-5 on Saturday afternoon from Clean Harbors Stadium on the Mass. Maritime campus.

Junior Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) led the Privateers racking up six points in the win. Quinn filled up the box score, recording three goals, three assists, three shots and three ground balls.

A trio of freshmen midfielders provided nine of the team's 14 goals throughout the team's nine-goal victory. Freshman Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) tallied four goals and an assist on eight total shots, six on goal. Freshman Ciara murphy scored three goals on seven shots and finally, while freshman Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added two goals on four shots.

Sophomore Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and freshman Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) anchored the defense, recording three ground balls each. Junior Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) played the full game at goalkeeper as she saved six of 11 shots in the sixty minutes.

Maritime stormed out to an early lead as Quinn started the scoring with her fourth goal of the season at the 24:07 mark. Just 56 seconds later, Deleva scored a goal to push the lead to two. The Privateers went on to add two more goals, coming from junior Jill Raimo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Murphy, before Maine Maritime scored their first goal of the game at 15:26 of the first half.

Over the last 12 minutes of the period, Deleva and Quinn added another two goals each, in between two Maine Maritime goals. With six seconds to play in the period, Pfundstein scored her first goal of the game and second of the season to increase the lead at the half to 9-3.

Pfundstein and Quinn connected once again to start the second period as Pfundstein scored her second goal of the match at the 28:56 mark. Murphy then added a free-position goal with 26 minutes to go to push the lead up to eight.

Soon after Murphy's goal, Maine Maritime answered with a goal from Briana Obshatkin to cut the margin to 11-4. However, the Privateers were able to take back the momentum when Deleva tallied her fourth marker of day just over a minute later. Quinn assisted on another goal when Murphy scored her third goal of the game at the 18:40 mark.

The game was scoreless for over 10 minutes until a Mariner goal with seven minutes left in the match. Senior Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) recorded the final goal of the game with 2:55 to go, making the final score 14-5.

Maritime (2-0) outshot the Mariners 33-17 in the game, including 19-7 in the first half. The teams tied in groundballs with 17 each. The Privateers dominated in draw controls, winning 15 out of 21.

The Privateers will look to carry their momentum from the Cup win into their next contest, which is Tuesday, March 15 against Wilkes in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. at 5 p.m.
