BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team captured the Maritime Cup Saturday afternoon after upending Maine Maritime 19-3 in the final game of the three-team tournament.
Sophomore
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) racked up nine points in the win, five goals and four assists, tied for the second highest point total in modern program history. Pellegrino went on a streak of five straight goals towards the end of the first quarter that opened up the lead from two to seven in a span of four minutes.
The Privateers took advantage of Maine Maritime's penalties, scoring seven goals in eight man-up opportunities. On the other side, Maine Maritime was 0-4 in man-up chances.
Ten different players scored goals for the Privateers. Behind Pellegrino, sophomore
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) recorded three goals and three assists on six shots. Juniors
Kevin Izzo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck) and
Chris Stickney (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), and sophomore
Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) each added two goals apiece.
After stellar play in yesterday's win over Mass. Maritime, sophomore goalkeeper
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) put up another dominant performance. McNally shut out the Mariners in the first half, recording two saves in his thirty minutes of action.
Maritime started off the game with two early first quarter goals, one by Stickney and one from senior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin).
Following the two early tallies, the defense for both sides tightened up. Neither team scored for over eight minutes until Pellegrino stopped the drought with his eighth goal of the season at the 4:55 mark, assisted by freshman midfielder
Patrick Fay (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet). Pellegrino then scored the next four goals to push the lead to seven at the end of the period.
The Privateers were able to expand their lead in the second quarter behind goals from juniors Izzo and Stickney as well as sophomores Danahy, Diaz and
T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Maritime led 13-0 going into halftime.
In the second half, Maritime was able to tack on six more goals while allowing Maine Maritime added three. Senior
John Hannon (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and freshman
Ian Olson (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) and
Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each scored a goal on their way to the 19-3 win.
The Privateers outshot Maine Maritime (0-2) 38-14 in total shots, and 31-7 in shots on goal. Maritime also won the faceoff battle, 17-8, led by Hayes, and were successful on 21 of 23 clear attempts.
Maritime (3-1) will enjoy a week off before resuming their non-conference schedule on March 19 against SUNY Polytechnic on Reinhart Field at 1 p.m.
