THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Lacrosse team upended SUNY Polytechnic 11-3 for their fourth straight win of the season on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.
Sophomore
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) led the Privateers with three goals and two assists in the win. Sophomore
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) also added four points with three goals and one assist.
In the faceoff circle, senior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) won 14 of 16 faceoffs, collecting nine groundballs. Hayes also scored a third period unassisted goal directly after one of his faceoff wins.
Sophomore
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) earned the win in goal. McNally racked up 12 saves and allowed two goals in 56 minutes.
Maritime's defensive unit was able to shutout the Wildcats in the first half, only allowing six total shots in the half. Sophomore
Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) racked up four caused turnovers and five groundballs.
Pellegrino opened up the game scoring a goal at the 12:51 mark from sophomore
Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport). Then Sophomore
Matthew Furlong (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg) tacked on another goal with five seconds to play in the first period. Pellegrino passed to the front of the net where Furlong was able to beat the goalkeeper up close.
The second period was more of the same as the Privateers added another two goals, one each from Pellegrino and Danahy. Maritime led 4-0 at halftime.
After the break, Diaz notched his first goal of the match on a man-up opportunity on a pass from Danahy. Next up was long-stick midfielder
Paul Lafrancesca (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North), who scored his first goal of the season with eight minutes to go in the third period while the Privateers were a man-down.
SUNY Polytechnic scored their first two goals of the game from Tyler Heldt just over a minute apart. The score was then 6-2 with four minutes to go in the period. Hayes answered with his goal at 4:17, pushing the lead back up to five.
In the final period, the Privateers scored the first four goals of the period to close out the game. Danahy added two more goals, freshman
Patrick Fay (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) scored his second of the season and then Pellegrino added his third of the game. The Wildcats scored the final goal of the game with over four minutes to play to make the final score 11-3.
Maritime (4-1) outshot SUNY Polytechnic (1-5) 57-23 in the win. The Privateers were 16 of 21 on clears and the Wildcats went 15 for 28.
Maritime will look to keep the win streak going on Wednesday, March 23, when they take on Coast Guard at 5 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
