Swimming Registers Men’s and Women’s Victories vs. Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's and women's swimming teams returned to the Riesenberg Aquatic Center on Monday evening, and hosted the Old Westbury Panthers for a Skyline Conference matchup. The men's team coasted to a 131-51 victory over the Panthers, while the women's team recorded a 113-74 win over Old Westbury.
 
The Privateers swept the majority of the night with the top times in 21 of 22 events on the evening, as the Panthers secured a first place finish in the women's 100 backstroke.
 
For the women, the night began with senior Treasa Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), junior Grace Stanton (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), sophomore Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and junior Sarah Soulagnet (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Homeschooled) pacing the field with a 50 second win over Old Westbury as the quarter recorded a time of 4:44.47.
 
Aaron followed that up with a 12:32.88 in the 1,000 freestyle, with senior Ashley O'Brien (Queens, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) tallying a second place finish with a 14:14.70. Stanton picked up an individual win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:15.22, while sophomore Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) took second place with a 2:34.71. In the 50 freestyle, senior Danielle Leahy (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) scored a 28.12 to pick up the win, while Murphy finished third with a 29.31.
 
Soulagnet scored her first individual win of the night in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:43.53, while sophomore Taylor O'Brien (Northport, N.Y./Northport) took third place in the event with a 3:08.19. Davis picked up the win in the 100 butterfly with a 1:22.41, which was seven seconds better than her closest competition. In the 100 freestyle, it was Leahy to once again pick up the win with a 1:02.59, as she edged Soulagnet who collected a 1:02.93.
 
In the 100 backstroke, Murphy collected a second place finish with a 1:11.77, while missing out on first place by just over a second. O'Brien took third with a 1:21.49, while junior Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) took fourth with a 1:27.63. In the 500 freestyle, Aaron completed her sweep of first place finishes in the distance events with a convincing 5:59.80, which was almost two minutes better than junior Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township), who fought back for second place. Stanton picked up a win in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:20.54, while A. O'Brien was second to the wall with a 1:33.80.
 
The night concluded for the women with another victory in the 200 freestyle relay, as it was A. O'Brien, Davis, freshman Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and Leahy to score the win with a 1:58.85. Maritime's second relay team of juniors Alexandra Schnabel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), Granit and Yee took third with a 2:21.10.
 
For the men, the night was a clean sweep of the events, which began with the 400 medley relay to open up the action. Sophomores Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), Preston Truong (Austin, Texas/Round Rock) and junior Doug Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) collected a 4:03.28, while Maritime's second, third and fourth relays came in that order ahead of the two Panther relays.
 
Freshman Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) continues to impress in the distance events as he scored another win in the 1,000 freestyle with a 11:20.54 to secure another first place finish for the Privateers. Junior Luke Doherty (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) took second, while freshman Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) took third with a 13:45.30.
 
Sophomore Lillo Rubino (Islip Terrace, N.Y./Central Islip), freshman Francis Horne (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) and junior Adrian Klein (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Gilmer Country (W. Va.)) swept the 200 freestyle, while senior Sam Dratch (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) and junior James Conway (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) registered identical times for a first place finish in the 50 freestyle with both collecting a 24.54. Senior Robert Lewis (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) powered his way to a victory in the 200 individual medley, with a five second win over freshman Matthew Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) as Lewis collected a 2:17.63.
 
Sophomore Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) posted a sub-minute time of 59.94 in the 100 butterfly, as senior Charles Schnebel (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Wu took the top three positions in the event. Junior Andrew Katz (Greenlawn, N.Y./Glenn-Elwood) scored a win in the 100 freestyle with a 53.64, while senior Jonathan Murray (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg) was second with a 55.08, and freshman Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) was third with a 55.91 to sweep the top three once again for the Privateers.
 
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Edwin Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) picked up the win with a 59.35, while Marino was second with a 1:01.08, and Lewis took third with a 1:02.06. The 500 freestyle saw sophomore Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) pick up a four-second win over classmate Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), as Blass picked up a 5:44.05 to DeYoung's 5:48.06. Freshman Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame) was first to the wall in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.82, followed by Katz, and sophomore Logan Riales (Bonham, Texas/Maury (Va.)).
 
The night concluded with Katz, Truong, Marino and Wu picked up a time of 1:35.17 in the 200 freestyle relay, which was just ahead of Kelleher, Murray, Dratch and Blass with a 1:36.86. Maritime's third squad finished third as the Privateers swept the podium once again.
 
With the victory, Maritime's women's team improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Skyline meets, the Privateers will take on both Sarah Lawrence and St. Joseph's (LI) in a conference double-dual at 7 p.m. on Friday. The men's team stays unblemished with a 4-0 overall and 2-0 league mark, the men's team will go head-to-head with Sarah Lawrence on Friday as St. Joseph's (LI) does not sponsor men's swimming.
