Men’s Soccer Stymied by NYU in Defensive Battle on Reinhart Field

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team played its final non-conference match of the 2016 season on Thursday and fell to the NYU Violets by the score of 2-0 on Reinhart Field.
 
The Violets scored twice in the first half and didn't turn back, as Maritime was held to seven shots by the New York University defensive unit.
 
Senior Matthew Pavek (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had two shots for the Privateers to lead the way, while five other individuals had solo shots on the contest. Freshman Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) had one shot on goal, while senior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist); sophomores Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem); and freshman Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) all had shots on the night.
 
Freshman Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) finished the contest with four saves, with two coming in each half of the contest.
 
Antenucci had a chance to score in the opening minutes of the first half, but missed a chance off target as he pushed his shot wide right of the post. Sblendorio had his opportunity of the night stopped by the NYU netminder in the 21st minute as the two sides remained scoreless.
 
As play crossed into the 33rd minute of play, the Violets got on the board on a cross into the six-yard box was knocked into the goal to put NYU on the scoreboard at 1-0. Just over 10 minutes later, the Violets added their second goal of the night on a through ball that was finished into the goal as NYU moved up by a pair.
 
In the second half, Ferreira's shot was the first of the period and sailed over the crossbar. In the following minutes, Ferreira took a corner kick that was sent towards the far post and pushed just wide by Olthoff-Cusumano on a header shot. Pavek took the final two shots of the night for Maritime, as one attempt went high while the other was blocked by the NYU defense.
 
The final horn sounded to end the game, as Maritime fell by a 2-0 margin.
 
Maritime (7-10-0, 3-6-0 Skyline) will be back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field for their final home game of the season as the team plays host to the Purchase Panthers in a crucial Skyline Conference matchup.
 
New York University (6-6-2, 1-3-0 UAA) will wrap up the road portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., when the Violets visit the York (N.Y.) Cardinals at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
