PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team played its second match in as many days and did not see any ill effects as the Privateers powered past the Purchase Panthers on Wednesday evening by a 3-0 score from the Purchase College Gymnasium.

Maritime won in straight sets as the team knocked off its host by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-21.
On the match the Privateers combined for 20 service aces, which is the most all season for the team, and the most since last season's win over Purchase in late October.

Leading the way for Maritime was senior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) with 11 kills on the match, while also adding two assists and four service aces. Junior
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had a pair of aces to go along with five kills and her team-leading six digs on the night.

Rachel Rothstein (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had six service aces, as both she and classmate
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) were tied for the team lead in aces. Bailey also had a team-best 21 assists and also had a kill and a dig on the contest. Freshman
Sheila Flaherty (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had four kills and was tied with Brady and Lombardo for the team lead in blocks with two apiece.

Irene Gogos (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Aviation) chipped in with five digs, while sophomore
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) picked up four digs and also put down a service ace. Sophomores
Colleen Ireland (Hyde Park, N.Y./Mount Olive (N.J.)) an
Isabella Kent (Narrowsburg, N.Y./Sullivan West) each had one kill on the contest.

It didn't take Maritime long to build an early lead in the opening set as the Privateers won nine of the first 12 points, which included three service aces from Bailey and three kills from Lombardo. After Purchase closed the gap to 9-7, Lombardo rattled off three-straight aces to propel the Privateers to the 25-17 set win.

The Privateers picked up six unanswered to open the second set and cruised ahead to a 9-1 advantage. Purchase was able to pull back within three at 20-17, but Maritime finished off the set with five straight points including three aces from Rothstein.

After Purchase took a 5-2 lead in the opening of the third set, Maritime powered its way back into the match on kills from Rothstein and Brady to even things up at five. Purchase continued to hold a slim lead over Maritime, but eventually the Privateers erased a 19-17 deficit and took a 22-19 lead behind three more service aces from Rothstein and a kill from Brady.

The Privateers finished off the match with a kill from Ireland to take the set by a 25-21 score.

Maritime (12-13, 4-5 Skyline) will not be playing its next regularly scheduled home game tomorrow as King's (N.Y.) does not have enough players to compete. Instead the Privateers will be returning home on Friday, October 28 for a 7 p.m. contest against John Jay from the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium

Purchase (1-18, 1-6 Skyline) will play again tomorrow evening at home, when the Panthers welcome in the Pratt Cannoneers for a 7:30 p.m. start from the Purchase College Gymnasium.
