Volleyball Senior Day Soured by John Jay in Friday Night Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team fell to the John Jay Bloodhounds inside the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium by the score of 3-1. The Privateers won the second set by a 25-18 score, but fell in the other three by the scores of 16-25, 18-25, 21-25.
 
Prior to the match, the Privateers honored the four members of their senior class as Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central), Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Irene Gogos (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Aviation), and Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who were all recognized in a brief on-court ceremony prior to the match.
 
Maritime was led by junior Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with a season-high 17 kills on the match, while Lombardo was second on the team with nine kills. Junior Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) added six kills on the evening. Bailey led the way with 29 assists, while Brady and Kempski had two service aces apiece to lead the team.
 
Defensively, Lombardo led the way with a season-best 22 digs, while Kempski added nine, and Brady had eight digs. Gogos, and Esposito added four apiece, while Bailey had three digs. Lombardo and Kempski had the team's lone blocks on the night.
 
The two sides were evenly matched as the opening set was tied at two and three, before Maritime opened a 12-7 advantage. John Jay closed the gap to one and then answered back to take a 20-14 lead. After two points by Maritime, the Bloodhounds closed out the set by a 25-16 score.
 
In the second set, Maritime opened a 6-2 lead as Brady scored a pair of aces. John Jay answered back to take a one-point lead but the Privateers tied the set at nine and regained the lead once again. After the set was tied at 13, Maritime scored the next three points and hung on for the set victory at 25-18.
 
John Jay took an early 4-1 set lead in the third stanza, and didn't turn back as the Bloodhounds went on for the 25-18 victory.
 
Following in the fourth set, Maritime and John Jay did not get more than two points away from one another until the Bloodhounds took a 17-13 lead. The Privateers were able to tie the match at 19, but John Jay answered back and emerged victorious at a 25-21 final score.
 
Maritime (12-14, 4-5 Skyline) will be back in action on Sunday, when the team plays host to a Skyline tri-match against Old Westbury at 11 a.m. and St. Joseph's (Bklyn) at approximately 3 p.m.
 
John Jay (11-11, 6-2 CUNYAC) will host City College of New York on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship.
