PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team played a Skyline Conference matchup on the road on Tuesday evening against the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles from Danzi Stadium in Suffolk County and fell to their hosts by the score of 2-0.
Maritime was led by senior
Matthew Pavek (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), who had three shots and two on target, while junior
Harry Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandenmeulen) had three shots with one on goal. Sophomores
Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and
Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem), as well as freshmen
Aleks Olthoff-Cusumano (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) added solo shots of their own during the match.
In goal, freshman
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) stopped one shot as he played the entirety of the contest.
St. Joseph's (LI) had a chance in the first minute of play as their initial shot of the match rang off the crossbar. As play continued, the next two Golden Eagle shots were wide of the target before St. Joseph's (LI) broke through with a goal at 7:03 into the contest.
Gallt had Maritime's first shot on goal in the 22nd minute but it was stopped by the Golden Eagle keeper. Olthoff-Cusumano, and Antenucci also had shots on goal in the first half but were denied as St. Joseph's (LI) held its 1-0 lead through the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Pavek had the first Maritime chance, which was stopped, before placing a header shot over the crossbar in the 65th minute of play. In the 83rd minute, St. Joseph's (LI) expanded its lead to two as a strong shot was just beyond the outstretched arms of Rodriguez.
Colucci had a chance stopped in the 88th minute of play before a pair of corner kicks by senior
Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) did not result in a shot for the Privateers with 28 seconds left in the match. The Golden Eagles added one more shot that was blocked by Maritime before the final horn sounded to give St. Joseph's (LI) the victory.
Maritime (7-9, 3-6 Skyline) will return home on Thursday evening for its final non-conference match of the 2016 season, when the team plays host to the New York University Violets for a 7:30 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.
St. Joseph's (LI) (7-8, 6-3 Skyline) will play its final two matches on the road beginning with the Sage Gators on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. in Lansingburgh, N.Y. at Lansingburgh High School.
