Second-Half Strike from Gallt gives Men’s Soccer 1-0 Conference Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team continued play in the Skyline Conference on Saturday afternoon and won versus the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears by the score of 1-0 at the CSI Soccer Complex.

Sophomore Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) scored just 42 seconds into the second half for the game's lone goal. Freshman Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) made three saves on the afternoon as he earned his third shutout of the season and tallied his sixth win in 2016.

Maritime controlled the early tempo of the match, as Gallt took a corner kick just two minutes into the first half. Senior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) took an early shot that sailed wide, followed by shots from Gallt and freshman Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) that were both saved.

In the 37th minute, Maritime was awarded a penalty kick, which was taken by Ferreira. The senior midfielder was denied by the Bears goalkeeper as the game remained scoreless. Ferreira had one more shot in the half, which was also saved as the match moved ahead to the second half.

Maritime got off to yet another quick start in the second half, as Gallt took advantage of a miscue by the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) goalkeeper, who tried to smother the ball and missed. Gallt then chipped the ball up and over several defensive players and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Privateers continued to put the pressure on as sophomore Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) had three shots on goal that were all saved in a span of 89 seconds. Freshman Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) put a header shot over the cross bar, while Sblendorio's next shot was wide right of the target.

Gallt looked to add to Maritime's lead but was unable to break through. Forrest, and senior Matthew Pavek (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) also had one more chance apiece looking to give the Privateers some more breathing room, but were not able to convert. However, the final whistle sounded and the Privateers had picked up the 1-0 win.

Maritime was able to hold the Bears to just eight shots in the second half, for a game total of 19. Maritime mustered 17 shots with 12 of those chances coming on target. Corner kicks were 9-6 in favor of the Bears, while both teams were whistled ahead of the play two times each.

Maritime (7-8, 3-5 Skyline) will play St. Joseph's (LI) on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Danzi Stadium on Long Island.

St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (4-9, 4-5 Skyline) will travel to Mount St. Vincent on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Athletic Field at Marillac in Riverdale, N.Y.
