Maritime Unable to Close Out Match, Falls to New Rochelle in Five Sets

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team won the first two sets of its match against the New Rochelle Blue Angels on Thursday night, but the visitors were able to come back to take the last three sets and the match inside Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. 
 
The Privateers started the game off strong, taking the first two sets by close margins. In the first set, the team trailed 22-20 before scoring five of the last six points to take the set 25-23. As for the second, the Privateers held off a comeback by New Rochelle after leading 22-15. New Rochelle stormed back to 24-23 before sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) came up with the set-winning kill.
 
In the third set, with the crowd behind them, Maritime stormed back from a 10-point deficit (15-5), but ultimately fell by just two points. During the comeback run, sophomore Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) served for seven consecutive points, including two service aces.
 
New Rochelle was able to use the momentum from the third set and take the following two sets 25-12 and 15-9 to close out the match.
 
Sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) put forth a strong performance with a team-high 15 kills and 10 digs. Brady also led the team with .256 attack percentage. Lombardo filled up the score sheet with 10 kills, 24 assists and a game-high 16 digs. Twenty-four assists is a new career high for the junior setter.
 
The Privateers, and first year head coach Michele Murray, will look to grab their first win of the season in their next contest at York College in Jamaica, N.Y. on September 10 at 7 p.m.
