JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Maritime Volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday evening on the road against York (N.Y.) in straight sets.

The win is also the first in the career of first-year head coach
Michele Murray as the team picked up the straight-set win by the scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-20.

Leading the way for Maritime was junior
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), who tallied 11 kills, while sophomore
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) also recorded 11. Lombardo also led the team with eight digs, and three service aces on the evening.

Junior
Erika Bailey (Newark Valley, N.Y./Tioga Central) made her Maritime debut and contributed with a total of 24 assists on the night to lead the squad. Her 24 assists tied her for sixth on the single-match record list. She became the first Privateer to record at least 24 assists since Claudette Killian did so back in the 2011 season.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first set, Lombardo got the Privateers on the board with a kill. However, the Cardinals collected three more points to take a 6-1 advantage in the early going. After falling behind 7-2, the Privateers went on a 23-8 run to pick up the first set win.

Over the course of the first set, Maritime got kills from Brady, Lombardo, Bailey, seniors

In the second set, Maritime rattled off nine of the first 11 points in the period to take an early 9-2 lead. After expanding its lead to 19-6, York (N.Y.) rallied for two straight points. After leading by a 22-10 score, Maritime got a kill from Lombardo, an error from the Cardinals, before an ace from Lombardo to finish off the set.

The sides exchanged solo points in the early-going of the third set, and the matched continued to be even until the Privateers fell behind 15-12. Brady got the ball back for her team with a kill to make the score 15-13, then got kills from Lombardo to tie and Kempski to take a one-point lead.

York (N.Y.) rattled off four unanswered points to regain the lead, but Maritime tied it at 19 with two errors by the Cardinals. After the sides exchanged points to make it 20-20, the Privateers rolled out five unanswered on kills from Bailey and Lombardo, along with two service aces from Bailey and a York (N.Y.) error to seal the victory.

Maritime led in the kills department at 36-11, and also controlled the service game with nine service aces. The Privateers also collected 32 assists, while collecting 28 digs in the match overall.

Maritime (1-2) will return home on Saturday morning when the team hosts its first tri-match of the season beginning with Sarah Lawrence at 10 a.m., and will later take on Bard at approximately 2 p.m.
