Chira-Farfan Nets Game-Winning Penalty Kick in Overtime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Senior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) was called to take a penalty kick with 2:24 left in the first overtime period, and converted on the opportunity as he broke the scoreless tie to give the Privateers their third consecutive victory on the season.

The goal was Chira-Farfan's third of the season as he sent a shot easily into the back of the goal as the Lehman Lightning were called for a foul with the Privateers driving down the field.

The shot was only Chira-Farfan's second of the night; while classmate Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led Maritime with three shots overall in the match. Senior Colton Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) also had a pair of shots, while seniors Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway), Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science), junior Demetri Geras (New York, N.Y./School of the Future), and freshmen Jack Feehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Billy Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) all registered one shot in the contest.

In goal, Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) picked up the clean sheet as he registered four saves on the evening. The shutout was the 10th of Weber's career, as he played all 97:36 in goal for the Privateers.

The early-going of the match proved to be a chess match, as both sides tried to find weaknesses in one-another's defensive units, but both offenses were unsuccessful. Through the first 45 minutes of play, Maritime had outshot Lehman by a 5-3 margin.

In the second half, both teams hit the crossbar within the first 15 minutes of the half as the two sides remained scoreless with the match crossing into the final 20 minutes of play. Lehman had a golden opportunity to score in the 73rd minute of the match, but Weber made a leaping save to push the ball high over the crossbar to safety.

The final minutes of regulation ticked off the clock, and the horn sounded to send Maritime to its third overtime contest of the season.

In the eighth minute of the overtime period, Maritime made an effort to score as players got tangled up inside the 18-yard box. The referee pointed to the penalty kick spot as he awarded the Privateers with a chance to end the game immediately, Chira-Farfan did just that as he planted the ball into the goal and sent the Privateers to a walk-off victory.

Overall shots in the match were 12-9 in favor of the Privateers, with six Maritime shots coming on target. The Privateers were also awarded seven corner kicks and were called offsides on one occasion.

Maritime (4-2) will head into conference play with its winning-streak intact, as the Privateers head to Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, N.Y. to take on Sarah Lawrence in the Skyline Conference opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Lehman (3-2) will also open league play on Saturday afternoon with its CUNYAC opener against Medgar Evers at 11 a.m. at Lehman College.
