Maritime Rolls to Victory over Medgar Evers

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team handled the Medgar Evers Cougars on Monday evening, as the team picked up the non-conference victory in convincing fashion at a final score of 10-2.

Twelve different players recorded at least one point on the evening, including senior Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science), who registered his first career multi-goal game with three tallies on the scoresheet. Senior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) also recorded a pair of goals for his third career two-goal match, while freshman Billy Horgan (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) netted the first two goals of his career.

Also picking his first goal of the season was senior Patrick McCarty (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway), while sophomore Brett Reilly (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded his second marker of the season. Sophomore Brian Gottlieb (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) also had a big night with his first career goal and had two assists on the evening on a pair of well-placed passes.

Senior Kevin Ferreira (Centereach, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) chipped in with three assists after coming off the bench in the first half, while junior Demetri Geras (New York, N.Y./School of the Future) had helpers on the first two goals of the match. Junior Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) collected his first point of the year with an assist.

Senior John Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa./Homeschooled) also recorded his first point of the season with an assist. While freshman Jack Feehan (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) recorded his first career point with an assist via throw-in, while classmate Parker Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) also recorded his third assist of the year.

It didn't take long for Maritime to get on the board as McCarty picked up the opening goal in the third minute off a Geras assist. Wattara picked up his first goal of the night on another Geras pass to make the score 2-0.

The Cougars did not go down quietly, as Medgar Evers scored to trim the lead in half at 2-1 following some poor play by the Privateers.

Wattara responded with his second goal of the night after receiving a pass from P. Gallt to increase the lead to two. However, Medgar Evers hooked a ball perfectly into the net on a corner kick to once again trim the deficit to one.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Feehan threw the ball deep into the box where it was met by Donnelly, who shuffled it off to Chira-Farfan to chip it over the pile and into the goal to put Maritime ahead by a 4-2 score at the break.

After halftime, Maritime put their offense into the next gear and dominated the majority of play in the second half as the short-staffed Cougars began to run out of steam.

Chira-Farfan connected on his second of the night off a corner kick from Ferreira, followed by Wattara completing the hat trick for his fourth goal of the season, also off a pass from Ferreira to make the score 6-2.

Horgan followed with his first goal of the night after a touch from Reilly, and the lead pass from Gottlieb. Up next on the scoresheet was Gottlieb, who curled in his own corner kick to increase Maritime's lead to six. Reilly scored his second of the season from a Gottlieb pass, while Horgan capped off the scoring at 10 with his second of the night off yet another pass from Ferreira.

In goal, senior Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a relatively quiet evening as he was required to make just two saves on the night. Corner kicks were well in favor of the Privateers, as the team finished the evening with 11.

Also making their collegiate debuts on the pitch for the Privateers were freshmen Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) who earned the start on the night, while classmate Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) also saw several minutes in the second half.

Maritime (3-2) will take Tuesday to prepare for its next game, which comes on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. when the Privateers take on the Lehman Lightning for a 7 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.

Medgar Evers (0-5) will also play Lehman next as the Cougars and Lightning open up CUNYAC play on Saturday, September 19 at 11 a.m.
