Men's Soccer Completes Comeback in Overtime vs. Baruch

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Soccer team needed overtime once again on Sunday afternoon, as the team upended the Baruch Bearcats by the score of 2-1 on Reinhart Field.

In the seventh minute of the first overtime period, junior Kieran Donnelly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was taken down in the box to set Maritime up for a penalty kick opportunity. Senior Colton Gallt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) buried the open opportunity to give the Privateers the one-goal victory.

Baruch got on the board just 39 seconds into the contest as the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick after a takedown near the end line. Baruch converted and took the quick 1-0 advantage.

Just 10 minutes later, freshman Matt Smith (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) found senior Sheick Wattara (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly for Math & Science) in the center of the field. Wattara sent a shot to the lower left corner of the goal to even up the game at the 10:47 mark of the contest.

Through the first 45 minutes of the match, the Bearcats outshot the Privateers by an 8-5 margin.

After the break, both teams played a physical game as the overall shot total dropped to a total of five, with the Bearcats taking two shots to Maritime's two. The two Privateer shots came from Smith and senior Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)).

With the game tied at two after the allotted 90 minutes, the teams went to overtime. For Maritime, it was the team's second-straight overtime appearance after its loss to Merchant Marine on Wednesday evening.

Baruch got the first opportunity in the extra session as the Bearcats were awarded a corner kick, the team got one shot off before senior Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y./Northport) yielded a short rebound, but Weber recovered nicely to make the second save as well.

Just over a minute later, Maritime was awarded a penalty kick as Donnelly was taken down. Gallt was up to the task on the kick as he sent the shot past the Baruch netminder to send the Privateers to their walk-off victory.

Maritime totaled eight shots with three coming on target, Baruch had 13 shots, with three on goal as well. Weber ended the match with a pair of saves as he picked up his second win of the season.

Maritime (2-2) will get back to action on Monday evening when the team hosts Medgar Evers for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Reinhart Field.

Baruch (2-2) will return to action on Saturday afternoon when the team welcomes in league-foe Staten Island to open up CUNYAC play.
