Women’s Lacrosse Unable to Overcome Mount St. Mary

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team played a conference matchup against the Mount St. Mary Knights on Wednesday evening, and fell to their Skyline rival by a score of 20-7 on Reinhart Field.
 
Maritime was led by sophomore Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) with four goals and one assist, while sophomore Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) chipped in with two goals. Junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) netted one goal to cap off the Maritime scoring at seven goals. Junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), sophomore Hannah Mutum (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and freshman Lily Jardines (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) also had assists on the contest.
 
Freshman Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) led the squad with five ground balls, while Lavelle along with freshmen Abigail Granit (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) and Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) added three ground balls each. Case and Granit also led the team with a pair of caused turnovers on the defensive side of the ball.
 
In goal, sophomore Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) made 11 saves in 60 minutes of play.
 
Mount St. Mary stormed out of the gates with nine unanswered tallies, Maritime responded with Ireland picking up her first of the game off a pass from Reynolds. The Knights scored the next three goals to take a 12-1 lead with 15:22 left in the opening period.
 
Brady got on the scoresheet off a pass from Mutum, followed by Ireland collecting her second of the game from a pass out of the stick of Jardines. Mount St. Mary scored once more in the half to take a 15-4 lead into the locker room.
 
The Knights opened the scoring in the second half with a strike within the first two minutes. Ireland responded with her third of the game on an unassisted goal. Mount St. Mary scored twice more before Lavelle scored her 14th goal of the season to make the game 18-6 with 11:40 left in regulation.
 
Mount St. Mary scored once more, followed by a goal from Brady off a pass from Ireland. The Knights scored once more in the closing minutes to cap off the scoring 20-7.
 
Final stats saw Mount St. Mary outshoot the Privateers by a 39-12 margin, while ground balls were also in favor of the Knights at a 26-20 clip. Mount St. Mary collected 23 draw controls to Maritime's six.
 
Maritime (2-6, 0-3 Skyline) will head back on the road for a contest at St. Joseph's (LI) on Long Island for a 1 p.m. start against the Golden Eagles.
 
Mount St. Mary (5-5, 3-0 Skyline) will take on Mount St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. start on Kaplan Field in Newburgh, N.Y.
