Late Rally Falls Short as Men’s Lacrosse falls to Merchant Marine

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team scored four times in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as the team fell to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 10-7 on Reinhart Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led the team with three goals, while freshman Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) was second on the squad with two goals. Freshmen Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) also picked up goals for the Privateers.

Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was 7-for-17 on faceoff attempts while he was tied for the team lead with four ground balls. Senior Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity), junior Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and freshman Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) all had four ground balls in the contest as well.

Strezenec, Hussey and Pellegrino all led the team with two caused turnovers each, while in goal Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) made 14 saves and collected three ground balls.

Merchant Marine scored twice in the first period to open up the scoring, but Maritime responded as Danahy picked up his 20th goal of the season to trim the lead in half at 2-1. The Mariners scored the next four goals of the game as the contest crossed into the second quarter.

With 5:39 to go in the half, Danahy picked up his second of the game off a pass from Pellegrino to make the score 6-2, heading into the halftime break.

Grubb opened up the scoring in the second half as he found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport). Merchant Marine scored three more times in the third period as the Mariners took a 9-3 lead into the final quarter.

After an early Mariner strike, the Privateers began to get their offense geared up as Grubb picked up his second of the game. Pellegrino registered a goal off a pass from Stickney, followed by a goal from Fusco 19 seconds later to make the game 10-6 with 8:31 left to go in the game.

The Privateers had several opportunities to score over the next few possessions, but were unable to record another goal until Grubb scored with 1:35 left in the game. The Grubb goal turned out to be the final tally of the contest as Merchant Marine held off the Privateers for the 10-7 win.

Maritime outshot its guests by a 42-29 margin, while both teams were relatively even in turnovers, ground balls and clears.
