Privateers Shock Stockton Ospreys with 11-10 Conference Win

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse team knocked off the Stockton Ospreys on Saturday afternoon by a score of 11-10 on Reinhart Field in Skyline Conference action.

The Privateers were led by freshman Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) with four goals on the game, to go along with one assist. Classmate Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) also had a team-best five points on the game with two goals and three assists, including the game-winning strike with 2:30 left in regulation.

Other goal scorers for the Privateers included seniors Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), while sophomore Chris Stickney (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and freshman Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and Julius Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) also found the back of the net.

In goal, freshman Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) led the way with a season-best 17 saves en route to the victory, while allowing the seven Osprey tallies. Senior Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led the defensive unit with five caused turnovers, while rookie Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) collected a pair.

Rose also led the team with seven ground balls, while junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and McNally each collected four ground balls. Junior Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) also chipped in with three ground balls, while Gangarossa, Hussey and freshman Scott Martin (Westhampton Beach, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) each had two.

Maritime jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Danahy found Pellegrino with a pass just four minutes into the contest to put the Privateers up by one. Stockton answered back several minutes later to even the game at one. The 1-1 score held through the remainder of the quarter.

In the second period, the Privateers found their groove once again offensively as Diaz, Stickney and Fusco all found the net during the first several minutes of the period to put Maritime up by a 4-1 mark. However, the Ospreys answered back with three of their own, including one with nine seconds left in the period to make the score 4-4 heading into the halftime break.

Maritime struck first in the third quarter, as Stickney found Pellegrino to put the home team ahead by a 5-4 margin. Stockton then responded with two more tallies to take its first lead of the game at 6-5.

In the closing minutes of the third quarter, Maritime outscored Stockton by a 3-2 mark as Pellegrino, Danahy, and Grubb all scored. Grubb's goal came with 59 seconds left in the third quarter, and also tied the game at eight heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Privateers moved ahead by one on Pellegrino's fourth of the game, once again coming off a pass from Danahy. Stockton then responded once again and took a one-goal lead once again at 10-9.

Maritime was awarded a man-up opportunity as some physical play forced three players to the sideline for Stockton, Gangarossa capitalized as he evened up the game at 10 with 3:33 left in regulation.

Hayes won the ensuing faceoff, and Stockton committed a penalty to put the Privateers in prime position to regain the lead late in the game. Maritime turned the ball over, but Stockton eventually gave it back as Gangarossa picked up the loose ball. Danahy then danced around the defense and ripped home a shot to put the home team up by an 11-10 score with 2:30 to go in the game.

However, the game was not over yet as Stockton picked up the win on the following faceoff and ripped a shot with less than two minutes left, but McNally was up to the task in goal for the Privateers. The Privateers turned the ball over on the clear attempt, and the Ospreys were able to get two more shot on goal, both denied by McNally.

With 21 seconds left, Stockton took a shot that was blocked by the Privateer defense, and picked up by Rooney. The clear was good, and Stockton took a penalty to seal the win for the Privateers.

Final stats saw Stockton outshoot Maritime by a 46-31 difference, with the shots on goal difference much closer at 27-23 in favor of the Ospreys. Turnovers were relatively close, while the Ospreys held the advantage in ground balls at 46-29.

One key difference in the game came in extra-man opportunities as Maritime was 3-for-8 on its chances while Stockton was 0-for-3.

Earning the offensive game ball was the Privateer midfield unit, while Rooney picked up defensive game ball honors. The Helmet Award was Hussey, while Martin was the team's Hammer Captain prior to the start of the contest.
