Women’s Lacrosse Falls on Senior Day to Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. –The Maritime women's lacrosse team fell to the Old Westbury Panthers on Sunday afternoon, 22-7 in the home season finale on Reinhart Field.

Prior to the game, senior midfielder Faye Dohring (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) was honored on senior day.

Maritime was led by freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with three goals. Sophomore Hannah Mutum (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) netted a pair of goals, and the duo of junior Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) and sophomore Kelsey Ireland (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) also added one goal each.

Lavelle led the team in draw controls with seven on the afternoon, followed by three from Ireland.

Lavelle also led the team in ground balls with six on the afternoon. Mutum picked up four ground balls, while Ireland and freshman Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) also added three ground balls apiece.

On the defensive side of the ball, Frankel led in the caused turnovers department with three, followed by two from Lavelle. In goal sophomore keeper Christina Finnen (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) played all 60 minutes and stopped seven shots.

After a pair of Old Westbury goals, Maritime got on the scoreboard when Lavelle scored her 21st of the season, making the score 2-1. Twenty seconds later, Mutum scored her seventh goal of the season, and tied the game at two.

The Panthers then scored seven unanswered goals, spanning nearly six minutes on the clock.

With 17:33 left in the first half, Brady scored cutting the deficit to 9-3. She then scored her 10th goal of the season off a pass from Lavelle.

The Panthers tacked on two more goals, before Mutum scored off a pass from Case, making the score 11-5. The visiting team scored three more times before Brady scored her third goal in the game, making the score 14-6 heading into the break.

In the second half, Old Westbury rattled off six unanswered goals, before Ireland scored off a pass from Mutum making the score 20-7. The Panthers then finished the game with two more goals.

Maritime (3-9, 0-6 Skyline) will be back in action on Saturday, when it takes on the Mount. St. Vincent Dolphins at 5 p.m. in Riverdale, N.Y.

Old Westbury (3-9, 2-4 Skyline) will play on Thursday when it takes on Centenary at 4 p.m.
