THROGGS NECK, N.Y. –The Maritime men's lacrosse team fell to the Montclair State Red Hawks on Saturday afternoon, 24-10 in the home season finale on Reinhart Field.
Prior to the game, seniors Brendan McGrath (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall), Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic), Rob Lalena (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity), Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Dan Martens (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack), and Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) were all honored.
Maritime was led by Freshman Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) with three goals, followed by classmate Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Grubb with two goals each. Ahern along with freshmen Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and Matthew Furlong (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg) each scored a goal of their own. Junior Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was 14-30 on face-offs and freshman Owen Hammond (Floral Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) was 3-6 in that department.
On the defensive side, the trio of juniors Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) along with Pellegrino had two caused turnovers apiece. Hayes led the team in ground balls with seven. Pellegrino added five and the quartet of Strezenec, Rooney, Grubb, and freshman Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) tallied three apiece.
In goal, McNally played the first 51 minutes stopping a season high 21 shots. Fellow freshman Ian Ballou (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) played the final 7:37 of the game and stopped three shots. Maritime recorded 36 shots, 41 ground balls, 17 face-offs won, and were 12-20 in clear attempts.
After a Montclair State goal less than two minutes into the game, Pellegrino scored his 25th goal of the season to tie the game at one. Montclair State scored next to take a 2-1 lead.
Grubb tied the game up at two off a pass from freshman Paul Lafrancesca (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North), followed by another Maritime goal from Pellegrino giving the Privateers a 3-2 lead. Montclair State tied the game at three with 9:34 to go in the opening period.
Ahern scored next for Maritime off a pass from Grubb, followed by a man-up goal from Grubb to put Maritime up 5-3. Montclair State scored twice more in the quarter to send the game to the second period tied at five.
The Red Hawks scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter, to take an 11-5 lead going into the break.
After halftime, Pellegrino scored man-up goal, off a pass from Grubb, to break Montclair State's streak of eight straight goals. However, the Red Hawks scored two more goals, to take a 13-6 lead, with 8:33 left in the third period.
Danahy answered back with a man-up goal off a pass from Grubb, but the Red Hawks came right back and scored a man-up goal of their own. Montclair State scored once more, followed by Fusco netting his seventh goal of the season with six seconds to go in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 15-8.
Danahy regained the team-lead in goals with his 28th of the season off a pass from Grubb, with just 17 seconds gone by in the quarter. Montclair State rattled off nine unanswered goals to take a 24-9 advantage.
Maritime scored the last goal of the game in a man-up opportunity as Furlong connected on a goal off a pass from freshman Mike Wickes (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). The goal and assist were the first career points for Furlong and Wickes respectively.
Maritime (6-7, 2-3 Skyline) will be back in action on Wednesday, when it takes on the Rams of Farmingdale, for a 7 p.m. start on Long Island.
Montclair State (9-5, 4-0 Skyline) will also play again on Wednesday, when they play Kean at home at 7 p.m.
