FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's lacrosse season came to an end on Wednesday evening as the Privateers fell to the Farmingdale Rams by the score of 12-6 on Long Island.
Maritime was led by freshman
Ian Danahy (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) with three goals, while classmates
Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East),
Matthew Furlong (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg) and
Joe Fusco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) all had goals on the game. Pellegrino, Fusco and senior
Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) all had assists on the contest as well.
Danahy finished the season with 31 goals on the year, which places him in a tie for second on the modern-day single-season list for goals in a season. Pellegrino finished the season with 28 goals, good enough for 10th on the single-season record list.
Defensively, junior
Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led the squad with three caused turnovers, while rookie
Joseph Hussey (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added two of his own. In goal, freshman
Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) picked up 12 saves to finish the year with 171, the fifth most in modern program history dating back to the 2004 season.
On faceoffs, junior
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) finished the game winning 14-of-21 draws and led the team with 12 ground balls, as he finished the campaign with 116, the third highest ground ball total in the last 11 seasons. The team also got four ground balls from Pellegrino and three each from McNally and Hussey.
Farmingdale stormed out of the gates with six unanswered goals with the sixth straight coming with 9:45.
Maritime got on the board with a goal off the stick of Pellegrino with 7:23 to go in the opening half to make the score 6-1. Farmingdale then took back its six-goal lead just 42 seconds later.
The Privateers scored once more to close out the half and went into the halftime break trailing by five at 7-2.
In the second half, the Privateers continued to pick up the tempo as Danahy collected his second goal of the game with just over seven minutes into the half. Fusco scored next off a pass from Ahern, as Maritime trimmed the deficit back to three at 7-4.
The Rams added three unanswered goals to take a 10-4 lead, with the game crossing into the fourth quarter in the process. Maritime ended the Ram run with Danahy's third of the game off a pass from Pellegrino with 9:01 left in regulation.
After two more Farmingdale goals, the Rams took a penalty late in the game to give Maritime a man-up opportunity, the Privateers capitalized as Furlong netted a goal off a pass from Fusco with eight seconds left in the game to make the score 12-6.
Turnovers, clears, and ground balls were relatively close, while both teams were 1-for-2 on man-up opportunities. Maritime controlled the faceoff game winning 15-of-22.
Maritime concludes its season with a 6-8 overall record and a 2-4 mark in Skyline contests. Farmingdale (8-6, 3-2 Skyline) will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday against Stockton.
